Racial differences in the incidence of mental health illness among ovarian cancer patients
Background: Ovarian cancer (OC) patients have an increased risk for a mental health illness (MHI) after their cancer diagnosis, but limited research exists on whether this risk differs by race/ethnicity. Hence, we used SEER-Medicare data to evaluate racial/ethnic differences in MHI incidence among OC patients aged 65+. Methods: Non-Hispanic (NH) Black, NH White, and Hispanic women diagnosed with OC in 2008-2015 without a mental health history 12 …
Exceptional Survival Among Kentucky Stage IV Non‐small Cell Lung Cancer Patients
PURPOSE: To determine differences in exceptional survival (ES)-survival of 5 years or more past diagnosis-between stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients residing in the Appalachian versus non-Appalachian regions of Kentucky. METHODS: This was a population-based, retrospective case-control study of Kentucky patients, diagnosed with stage IV NSCLC between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2011. The data were drawn from the Kentucky Ca…
Global surveillance of trends in cancer survival 2000–14 (Concord-3)
BACKGROUND: In 2015, the second cycle of the CONCORD programme established global surveillance of cancer survival as a metric of the effectiveness of health systems and to inform global policy on cancer control. CONCORD-3 updates the worldwide surveillance of cancer survival to 2014. METHODS: CONCORD-3 includes individual records for 37·5 million patients diagnosed with cancer during the 15-year period 2000-14. Data were provided by 322 populatio…
Cancer Incidence in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia
CONTEXT: Composed of all or a portion of 13 states, Appalachia is a heterogeneous, economically disadvantaged region of the eastern United States. While mortality from cancer in Appalachia has previously been reported to be elevated, rates of cancer incidence in Appalachia remain unreported. PURPOSE: To estimate Appalachian cancer incidence by stage and site and to determine if incidence was greater than that in the United States. METHODS: Using …
Improving Substance Abuse Treatment for Indigent Clients in Detroit
It has been clearly established that substance abuse treatment works (De Leon 1988). Thus, activities which increase the proportion of indigent clients in Detroit who actually get into treatment and activities which help indigent clients stay in treatment are likely to significantly improve treatment outcomes. The Target Cities projects in general and the Detroit Target Cities project in particular represent some of the few efforts currently unde…
The effectiveness of a tobacco prevention program with adolescents living in a tobacco-producing region
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the efficacy of a social-influences tobacco prevention program conducted with adolescents living in a high tobacco production area. METHODS: Students in 10 experimental schools completed the tobacco prevention program and a booster intervention. Control students received health education as usual. RESULTS: After 2 years of treatment, smoking rates in the treatment group (vs the control group) were lower for 30-…
Efficacy of System Management or Ownership as Options for Distressed Small Rural Hospitals
Systems linkages through signing a management contract or selling to a multihospital system have been advocated as strategies for addressing the distress of small rural hospitals through increased management capacity. This national study compares 311 independent self‐managed hospitals, 194 independent systems‐managed and 235 systems‐owned and managed hospitals in relation to occupancy levels and secondary measures of performance. Almost no differ…
