This open access edited volume shines new light on the history of propaganda and persuasion during the Nordic welfare epoch.

The contribution of Denmark to world cinema has been substantial: not just relative to the size of the population, but by any measure. In the silent period, the pioneering work of the company Nordisk Films Kompagni, and the emergence of early film stars such as Asta Nielsen, secured Denmark a place as a leading film nation. The auteur Carl Theodor Dreyer won global renown during his five-decade career. Documentary and educational filmmaking flour…

They Guide You Across (Ingolf Boisen, 1949) was commissioned to showcase Scandinavian cooperation in the realm of aviation (SAS) and was adopted by the newly-established Unit…
What we do is not art, it is definitely storytelling”
“Slow TV” has emerged as the label for a series of long-duration programmes showcasing Norway’s landscape and traditions, conceived in 2009 as an experiment for NRK, the national public service broadcaster. In this interview, producer Thomas Hellum explains the concept, principles and working methods behind Minutt for minutt. Ultimately, he insists, the extreme duration of many of the programmes is a function of the principles and culture of publ…
Accounts of Quitting among Older Ex-smokers with Smoking-related Disease
This article uses a discourse analytic method to explore how a sample of ex-smokers with smoking-related illness position themselves, and are positioned by, the language they use in their accounts of quitting. The article suggests that discursive constructions (having 'no choice' and getting 'another chance') used by the respondents position them in a way that constrains behaviour by closing down the option of smoking and/or opening up the possib…
