Treatment of substance use disorder and psychological trauma: Outcomes of the women of worth program
Given the co-occurrence of substance use disorder (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder, existing SUD treatment programs are integrating the treatment of psychological trauma into their programming. The present study evaluated 120 women enrolled in the Women of Worth program, a gender-responsive treatment model, on several treatment outcomes. Substance use, depression, psychological trauma severity, and substance-related problems decreased sign…
Neighborhood Predictors of Intimate Partner Violence: A Theory‐Informed Analysis Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling
Highlights Understanding men's experiences related to IPV perpetration has promise to improve IPV intervention. Combining prevailing theories provides a promising framework for ecological IPV research. Female‐to‐male partner violence puts women at significantly greater risk for IPV victimization. Neighborhoods of higher concentrated disadvantage enhance women's risk of IPV victimization
Adapting Parent–Child Interaction Therapy to Foster Care: Outcomes From a Randomized Trial
Objective: This study presents outcomes from a randomized trial of a novel Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) model for foster families. Differential effects of two intervention doses on child externalizing and internalizing symptoms are examined. Method: A sample of 102 foster children was assigned to one of three conditions—brief PCIT, extended PCIT, or wait-list control. The brief and extended groups received 2 days of PCIT training and 8…
Screening for Problem Substance Use in Community-Based Agencies
Brief screening for problem substance use was conducted in a midsize Midwestern city in community-based agencies that provided a range of services. Over 3 years, 14,162 persons requesting both substance-use-specific and non-substance-use-specific services were screened with the Rapid Alcohol Problem Screen. Of all persons screened, 28% reported a positive score. The percentage of positives by agency type were reported as 83.7% for substance abuse…
Reactions of Heterosexual African American Men to Women's Condom Negotiation Strategies
This study describes responses of 172 single heterosexual African American men, ages 18 to 35, to condom negotiation attempts. Strategies used included reward, coercive, legitimate, expert, referent, and informational strategies, based on Raven's (1992) influence model. The purpose was (a) to identify strategies influencing participant acquiescence to request and (b) to identify predictors of participant compliance/refusal to comply with negotiat…
Condom Use Negotiation in Heterosexual African American Adults: Responses to Types of Social Power-Based Strategies
This study examined gender differences and preferences in the use of and response to six different styles of condom use negotiation with a hypothetical sexual partner of the opposite gender. Participants were 51 heterosexually active African American adults attending an inner-city community center. Participants completed a semistructured qualitative interview in which they were presented with six negotiation strategies based on Raven's 1992 Power…
Childhood Sexual Abuse and HIV Risk Among Men Who Have Sex with Men: Initial Test of a Conceptual Model
Effects of Quality of Life and Coping on Depression among Adults Living with HIV/Aids
This prospective study examined the effect of maladaptive coping strategies and psychological quality of life (QOL) on depression at two time points in a diverse sample of persons living with HIV/AIDS ( N = 85). The use of maladaptive coping strategies to deal with the stress of living with HIV/AIDS, particularly engaging in various kinds of avoidant behaviors, was significantly associated with greater depression at baseline and increased depress…
Beyond Treatment Effects: Predicting Emerging Adult Alcohol and Marijuana Use among Substance-Abusing Delinquents
Secondary analyses of a randomized clinical trial examined the effects of 4 putative risk factors and 2 protective factors in predicting drug use among 80 emerging adults treated 5 years earlier for delinquency and alcohol and/or marijuana use disorders. Frequency of marijuana use and the number of comorbid psychiatric disorders in adolescence predicted cannabis use in emerging adulthood. Increasing academic competence at high levels of social co…
Relations among Mock Jurors' Attitudes, Trial Evidence, and Their Selections of an Insanity Defense Verdict: A Path Analytic Approach
This study examined an important question relevant to the domain of the insanity defense: What are the interrelationships among important evidential and attitudinal factors which influence how jurors decide their final verdicts? To answer this question, a mock trial in which the insanity defense was argued was presented to 224 college undergraduates by means of an audiotape and slide show. Following the presentation, participants were asked to an…

Reputation and behavior of battered women who kill their partners: Do these variables negate self-defense
