  • Psychological health among older adult women in the United States during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Victoria B Marshall, Savannah C Hooper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2023

This study examined differences in mental health in older adult women before versus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants who were community dwelling (N = 227) included n = 67 women aged 60–94 in the pre-pandemic group and n = 160 women aged 60–85 in the peri-pandemic group who completed self-report measures assessing mental health and quality of life (QOL). We compared mental health and QOL indices across the pre- and peri-pandemic groups. …

  • The Longitudinal Associations of Body Dissatisfaction with Health and Wellness Behaviors in Midlife and Older Women

Open Access•Lisa Smith Kilpela, Savannah C Hooper et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Emerging research suggests that body dissatisfaction (BD) is prevalent among midlife and older women (i.e., upwards of 70%). Cross-sectionally, BD is associated with myriad poor health and wellness outcomes (e.g., depression, disordered eating, bad nutrition) in midlife/older women. However, relatively few studies have examined the longitudinal relations between BD and health outcomes in this population. This preliminary study investigated the lo…

  • Body image in older women

Lisa Smith Kilpela, Christina L Verzijl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•2021

Negative body image is prevalent among mid- and late-life women. In younger women, negative body image is associated with reduced quality of life (QOL) when controlling for body mass index (BMI), and mediates the relationship between obesity and emotional wellbeing. Yet, much remains unknown about body image in older populations. In our sample of women aged 50–86 (N = 181), negative body image mediated the relationship between BMI and sleep, all …

  • Dying in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Angie S Leroy, Bárbara J Robles et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2020

Dying is a natural part of life; however, death is often a fearful, frightening event. Dying in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic presents challenges that magnify normative fears and may interfere with a healthy grieving process. To maintain a resilient spirit among those who are at risk of losing a loved one or who have lost a family member to COVID-19, it is important that they be provided with the necessary contextually and culturally appropr…

  • Sexual trauma uniquely associated with eating disorders

Francesca Gomez, Lisa Smith Kilpela et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2020

Objective: Extensive research supports the contention that trauma exposure is a nonspecific risk factor for the development of eating disorders (EDs). Limited research has investigated the relative association of diverse types of traumatic events with EDs in the same statistical model. In a recent exception, Breland et al. (2018) found that only sexual trauma predicted ED pathology among female veterans when both sexual trauma and combat exposure…

  • Body image in adult women

Open Access•Carolyn Black Becker, Christina L Verzijl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 40

This study examined body image in adult women along with probable correlates including health behaviors, negative affect, quality of life, and functional impairment. Adult women ( N = 738, age = 25-86 years) completed an online survey assessing these domains. Women across all ages reported similar body image concerns. Negative body image significantly correlated with poorer wellness behaviors, negative affect, quality of life, and functional impa…
