Introduction. Nineteenth-Century Protest Movements in Britain
This article surveys the historiography of nineteenth and early twentieth century British protest movements and thus provides a broad framework for the contributions to this volume. It begins by providing a portrait of some of the key developments in the field, with a focus on the impact of post-war social history and the emergence of ‘history from below’. It then details some of the ways in which this body of work was built upon, challenged and …
“A state of permanent popular deliberation is indispensable”
This article explores the engagement of British residents in Paris with the republican turn in the French Revolution. It argues that some British nationals who had taken up residence in the French capital by 1792 were drawn to supporting the drive towards greater active involvement of the broader citizenry in voicing their assent or dissent to primary legislation. « Cette heureuse contrée deviendra désormais une terre de promission »
Plusieurs hommes et femmes britanniques, inscrits dans des mouvements pour la réforme parlementaire en Grande-Bretagne, s’installèrent à Paris après la chute de la Bastille en juillet 1789 afin d’observer de plus près les événements de la Révolution française et d’y participer. Pour certains, c’est la chute de la monarchie le 10 août 1792 qui devient le moteur de leur engagement politique sur le sol français. Cet article a pour but de replacer le…
Habitat Segregation Patterns of Container Breeding Mosquitos
Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are important pathogen-carrying vectors that broadly exhibit similar habitat suitability, but that differ at fine spatial scales in terms of competitive advantage and tolerance to urban driven environmental parameters. This study evaluated how spatial and temporal patterns drive the assemblages of these competing species in cemeteries of New Orleans, LA, applying indicators of climatic variability, vegetation, a…
Mosquito Vector Production across Socio-Economic Divides in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
We investigated the role of socio-economic factors in the proliferation of mosquito vectors in two adjacent but socio-economically contrasting neighborhoods in Baton Rouge, LA, USA. We surveyed mosquito larvae habitat, mosquito larvae, and adult mosquitoes during the summer of 2020. We also evaluated the number of requests for mosquito abatement services in the years preceding the study for each area. While we did not find differences in terms of…
The Society of the Friends of the Rights of Man, 1792-94
This article focuses on the English-speaking community in revolutionary Paris after the establishment of the National Convention in September 1792. More specifically, it highlights the close ties forged between British and Irish radicals within the Society of the Friends of the Rights of Man at what was a critical juncture for foreign residents in the French capital. It suggests that British radicals in Paris adhered to a broadly Paineite traditi…
