Demography of Sexual Orientation in Adolescents
This study was undertaken to explore patterns of sexual orientation in a representative sample of Minnesota junior and senior high school students. The sample included 34 706 students (grades 7 through 12) from diverse ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic strata. Five Items pertaining to sexual attraction, fantasy, behavior, and affiliation were embedded in a self-administered survey of adolescent health. Overall, 10.7% of students were "unsure"…

This paper presents a model of the construction of social reality through human interaction. Human interactants are characterized as creating (realizing) the facts they come to believe about themselves. This creative process occurs during interpersonal interactions in which both desirable and/or undesirable facts emerge. A case study of a couple in therapy demonstrates the process through which a husband and wife have created many undesirable fac…

This paper characterizes patterns of aggression as culturally sanctioned forms of relationship governed by recognizable rules and voluntarily selected. In a study employing two scenes of physical violence, one depicting a domestic encounter and the other a relationship between male friends, respondents were asked to predict, advise, and evaluate the characters' actions. This paper illustrates a dialectic perspective of relationship development, using a case study of a divorced couple who have become friends. This perspective suggests that relationships oscillate between opposites (stability/changes, intimacy/detachment), and exhibit unity of opposites (including both stability/change, intimacy/detachment).
