Informal adaptations in restructuring supply chains
This article examines how geopolitical tensions reshape informal economic activities through supply chain restructuring. Drawing on 60 interviews with workers and systematic analysis of 47 policy documents across Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria, the research develops the concept of “geopolitical informality,” informal economic adaptations triggered by interstate competition rather than domestic factors. Triangulating interview data with union estima…
Beyond Green Capitalism
Heterodox debates already accept that market-centric “green” fixes are limited; what is missing is a mechanism-level account of how they misrecognize regulatory informality and autonomous communitarian societies. This article makes three contributions. First, it offers a typology separating regulatory informality from communitarian societies, showing why formalization-centric governance criminalizes the former and encloses or bypasses the latter.…
Auction structure and court-ordered real estate sale outcomes
This study examines the effects of a significant legal change in Turkey’s real estate auction system on co-ownership dissolution outcomes. In 2013, Turkey shifted from a two-step auction process—with sequential starting prices set at 60% and 40% of a property’s appraised value—to a single-auction model with a starting price at 50%. Using a regression discontinuity design, this paper analyzes the effect of this shift on final sale prices, time to …
A multi-level futures analysis of European teleophthalmology through 2040
As Europe faces unprecedented demographic shifts and technological advancement, the future of eye care delivery stands at a critical juncture. This paper develops a comprehensive conceptual framework for understanding how teleophthalmology will transform European healthcare delivery through 2040. Drawing on futures studies methodology and healthcare innovation theory, we propose a multi-level framework that captures the dynamic interplay between …
Anticipatory macroeconomic governance
This paper aims to identify and discuss the integration of anticipatory practices in the macroeconomic governance regime, an emerging yet crucial dimension in the field. It examines the contextual differences shaping these practices at the intersections of society, innovation, policy, and governance, focusing on the interrelationship between institutions, cultures, and national contexts. The study also investigates the multi-dimensional relations…
Democracy and fiscal-policy response to Covid-19
In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the level of democracy and fiscal-policy response to the economic crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. We use a novel cross-country panel dataset of fiscal-policy responses with time variation. Our results suggest that more democratic countries adopted substantially larger fiscal-policy packages (in % GDP), and the gap regarding the size of packages between more democratic and less democr…
Economic stimulus measures in the pandemic
Is fiscal federalism associated with economic policy responses and stimulus measures adopted by national and sub-national governments to mitigate the adverse economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic? In this paper, we provide empirical evidence that it indeed is. Our results indicate that even after controlling for various relevant factors, countries with fiscally federal (decentralised) governments have adopted larger fiscal and macro-financial…
Fiscal stimulus packages to Covid‐19
In this paper, we use a novel cross‐country dataset to investigate the relationship between the prevalence of the shadow economy and fiscal policy responses to the economic crisis induced by the pandemic. The finding is that countries with a relatively larger shadow economy before the pandemic have adopted a smaller fiscal policy package. The results are robust to different econometric specifications, including an instrumental variable estimation…
Measuring green technology adoption across countries
In this article, we construct an empirical framework to identify and measure the adoption of green technologies across countries. Using an annual dataset covering 89 countries from 1990 to 2016, we conduct a principal component analysis incorporating the different dimensions of the adoption of green technologies. The analysis allows us both to rank countries for their level of green technology adoption and also recommend policies to improve their…
Persistency of military spending and fiscal policy responses to Covid-19
Using a relatively large time-varying cross-country panel dataset of fiscal policy responses to the Covid-19 pandemic, this paper examines the relationship between military spending persistency and the size of the fiscal stimulus packages. The results suggest that countries with more persistent military spending have had smaller fiscal-stimulus packages during the Covid-19 pandemic
Informality, inequality, and feminization of labor
The Informal Economy
Is informality a barrier to sustainable development
In this article, using a novel, annual cross‐country panel dataset that covers 160 economies from 1950 to 2016, we examine the association between the size of the informal sector and various indicators of sustainable development. The range of indicators encompasses health‐related, economic, environmental, education, and social variables. Our results suggest that the size of the informal sector is negatively associated with GDP per capita, carbon …
Underground Economy
The undeground economy is a sector that produces legal and illegal goods outside government scrutiny and regulations. In that sense, it includes unreported income from the production, consumption, and transaction of legal goods and services. This entry reviews the definition, main causes, and effects as well as various ways of measuring the underground economy.
