Amazonian Ecocentrism as an Emerging Alternative in the Environmental Crisis: Contributions Related to Animal Otherness
This article explores some aspects of the ecocentric thinking implicit in the ancestral cosmovisions of Amazonian peoples with the intention of shedding light on the relationship between respect for animal otherness and ecosystem balance. The research is based on a review of anthropological texts that focus on the Amazonian cultures of Latin America, and on specific contributions of Latin American feminisms that represent a critique of anthropoce…

Microbial Extractions: Sequence-based Bioprospecting, Augmented Promises, and Elusive Politics
In view of the end of the golden years of the Norwegian oil economy, ocean genetic resources are being advertised in policy environments as holding great potential for the future of the country. Microbes have increased in popularity as promising agents of the Norwegian new bioeconomy, as advances in gene sequencing technologies and genomics have made them more accessible. This paper examines the turn toward digital sequence data in bioprospecting…
Extractions: Data Infrastructures and the Public Good
This special issue invites reflection on digital forms of resource extractivism, through thinking-with microbes, fish, smart energy, and human bodies. We examine the confluence of infrastructure building, public good enactment, and nature datafication to account for novel forms of resource economies. The articles in this collection empirically investigate the various ways in which nature is turned into resource in laboratory and experimental site…

Do-it-yourself biology and electronic waste hacking: A politics of demonstration in precarious times
In recent years, there has been an explosion of do it yourself, maker and hacker spaces in Europe. Through makers and do-it-yourself initiatives, ‘hacking’ is moving into the everyday life of citizens. This article explores the collective and political nature of those hacks by reporting on empirical work on electronic waste and do-it-yourself biology hacking. Using Dewey’s experimental approach to politics, we analyse hacks as ‘inquiry’ to see ho…
Making Common Sense of Vaccines: An Example of Discussing the Recombinant Attenuated Salmonella Vaccine with the Public
Researchers have iterated that the future of synthetic biology and biotechnology lies in novel consumer applications of crossing biology with engineering. However, if the new biology's future is to be sustainable, early and serious efforts must be made towards social sustainability. Therefore, the crux of new applications of synthetic biology and biotechnology is public understanding and acceptance. The RASVaccine is a novel recombinant design no…
Public engagement coming of age: From theory to practice in STS encounters with nanotechnology
In this paper, we present a study of Science and Technology Studies (STS) perspectives on public engagement, specifically focusing on the gap between theory and practice. In aiming to develop a conceptual map of this gap, we identify five top topics of tension. These are related to the general questions of: “Why should we do public engagement?,” “Who should be involved?,” “How should it be organised?,” “When should it be done?” and “Where should …
Activist trust: The diffusion of green expertise in a Brazilian landscape
MST (Movimento Sem Terra/Landless People’s Movement) is the largest rural movement of Latin America. Since the late 1990s, it has taken part in the diffusion of expertise about biodiversity conservation. Using an ethnographic approach, this paper investigates sources and roles of trust within this process. How does trust work when experts and laypeople belong to the same movement? The paper uses and critically discusses the works of Brian Wynne a…
Opening Up for Participation in Agro-Biodiversity Conservation: The Expert-Lay Interplay in a Brazilian Social Movement
Patient expectations are not always the same
OBJECTIVE: To validate a scale that measures patients' expectations when seeking advice for health problems of different types. METHODS: 360 patients who had consulted their general practitioner (GP) during the previous 12 months were randomly selected from the lists of 30 GPs. A questionnaire, including a 13-item expectation scale, was administered by interview in the patient's home to assess expectations in relation to five health problems, thr…
Palaeoclimatic Identification Based on an Isotope Study of Travertine From the Copper Age Site at Los Millares, South‐eastern Spain
Remains of an aqueduct from the Copper Age settlement of Los Millares have been studied. The isotope results (—7‰ 18 O — 5.3‰) show that the aqueduct was used to transport fresh water at room temperature. The results are inconsistent with the aqueduct being used for hot water transport or as a container for water exposed to evaporation processes. Both isotopic and mineralogical results were useful in identifying the origin and use of building mat…
