MtDNA Analysis Reveals a Major Late Paleolithic Population Expansion from Southwestern to Northeastern Europe
Usher syndrome in the Samaritans
We have previously reported significant linkage between markers on 11q13.5 and Usher syndrome type 1 (USH1B) in a large Samaritan kindred. USH1B is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by profound congenital sensorineural deafness, vestibular dysfunction and progressive visual loss. A unique haplotype found only in all USH1B carriers and affected individuals implied that the disease-causing mutation probably entered the community from a s…
Global Patterns of Linkage Disequilibrium at the CD4 Locus and Modern Human Origins
Haplotypes consisting of alleles at a short tandem repeat polymorphism (STRP) and an Alu deletion polymorphism at the CD4 locus on chromosome 12 were analyzed in more than 1600 individuals sampled from 42 geographically dispersed populations (13 African, 2 Middle Eastern, 7 European, 9 Asian, 3 Pacific, and 8 Amerindian). Sub-Saharan African populations had more haplotypes and exhibited more variability in frequencies of haplotypes than the North…
Genetic evolution of the Samaritans
Detailed pedigrees of the small Samaritan isolate covering the last thirteen generations and consisting of 82 founders and 670 descendants allowed calculations of (a) the probability of origin of genes from particular founder members, and (b) the total number of descendants from each founder. Analysis of the matrix of distances between the thirteen generations identified the kind and the direction of the evolution of this community: rapid evoluti…
Ethnic communities in Israel
One hundred and ninety‐six Moroccan Jews now settled in Israel were typed for 7 blood groups, 12 red cell enzymes and 2 plasma protein systems. Their blood group picture is in agreement with results previously obtained on different samples of Moroccan Jews: rather high B in ABO, somewhat elevated frequencies of cDE and cDe in Rh and K in Kell. Differences in various blood markers exist between them and other North African Jewish communities. This…
Ethnic communities in Israel
One hundred eighty‐eight Jewish individuals who either they or whose both parents were born in Iraq were typed for 7 blood groups (ABO, MNS, Rh, Kell, Duffy, P and Kidd), 12 red cell enzyme systems and 2 serum proteins. Iraqi Jews are characterized by a high frequency of A (in ABO), N (in MNS), low cde (Rh) and low Hp‐1. Several rare electrophoretic variants were encountered: PGM 1 6‐1, PHI 3‐1 and PHI 2‐1, and an unidentified AK phenotype. No ev…
