Reconsidering the Letter to the Ephesians in Ancient Context
Research is currently discovering the Letter to the Ephesians as an independent voice on other topics than ecclesiology that were also of interest to Paul. The contributors to this volume take this increased interest into account and discuss Deutero-Pauls Christological design, his revision of the Corpus Paulinum and the Letter to the Colossians, his early Christian interpretation of Greek philosophy and science, and his anthropological concept.

Natural and Mosaic Laws in Philo of Alexandria
This paper discusses the relationship between natural law and Philo of Alexandrias code of laws as they are presented in Philos later works written in Rome in 40–49 ce. In response to recent interpretations, we argue that Mosaic law, as explicated by Philo, is not identical with natural law; instead, Philo considers Mosaic law to only imperfectly share in the authority of natural law, as attested by his descriptions of Mosaic law as a (mere) copy…
Religion in the Roman Empire
Religion in the Roman Empire (RRE) aims to advance and document new and integrative perspectives on religion in the ancient world, combining multidisciplinary methodologies. Committed to interdisciplinarity and new approaches to the study of religion, it offers a space to take up recent, but still incipient, research to modify and cross the disciplinary boundaries of the History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, Ancient History, J…
Reconsidering the Letter to the Ephesians in Ancient Context
Study of the Deutero-Pauline letter to the Ephesians in the New Testament has typically focused on ecclesiology by assuming a generalized notion of church. In contrast, in this interdisciplinary volume the contributors delve into an array of underlying subjects in order to give the terms governing our understanding of Ephesians a much-needed further specificity and an enlarged foundation. The contributions in this collection address the following…

One intriguing aspect of studying the translations of the Gospels from Greek into Latin concerns the rendering of technical architectural vocabulary. Many instances illustrate the multiplicity of strategies Latin translators employed to find terms, concepts and descriptions for building types, construction materials and methods, architectural components, or their role in the narrative. This article presents important variant readings to better un…
Illness, Suffering, and Treatment in a Changing World

Prayer and the Ancient City
This volume is a first attempt to investigate the impact of urban space on prayers and related religious thought and belief in ancient religions from the first to the sixth century CE. Taking its lead from the spatial turn in scholarship, methodologically it is an attempt to replace the hitherto customary focus on the forms and semantics of prayer with an urban-spatial model. This model understands prayers as performances that are embedded and em…
The Inner Being as a Place of Individual Relationship with God in 2Cor 4
Paul’s letters to 2 Corinthians and to Romans afford deep insight into the “inner and outer human being.” Until now, the Platonic concept of the “inner/outer human being,” which is specially oriented towards the soul, has been of pivotal importance for New Testament Exegesis. This article argues instead that the principle of an inner and outer human being was used in Hellenistic times with differing connotations and in differing contexts and that…

Picturing the New Testament
How do visual images from the ancient world throw light on New Testament texts? In a methodologically sophisticated manner, the contributions in this volume investigate early Christian images with regard to the ancient context.
Disease and Healing in a Changing World
The Vetus Latina, or 'Old Latin Bible,' comprises a diverse collection of Latin biblical texts which encompasses unauthorised versions of the Bible translated into Latin. These Old Latin manuscripts reflect the early struggle for a 'proper' understanding of biblical texts, which is interesting for the healing stories of 'female patients' like the woman with 'the issue of blood'. This paper argues that parallel to the spread of medical knowledge b…
Borders - Terminologies, Ideologies and Performances
"What are the relevant conceptualities and terminologies marking political, cultural, cultic, or religious borders and border zones? What terms represent "border" or "border zones" and what did they signify in antiquity? In this volume, an international group of archaeologists, classicists, historians, and biblical scholars investigates various terms, performances, and qualities of borders, and ideologies of boundaries in antiquity. Their primary…

Spirit and Rebirth in the Gospel of John
Insofar as Christianity can be said to have begun with the disappearance of a body, namely the absence of Jesus’ body in the grave, this disappearance occasioned not so much a disjuncture with Jesus’ preceding work as a new start, by way of a salvific turn, according to multiple accounts in the New Testament. It is through the absence of Jesus’ body and subsequent appearances of the risen Jesus that the messianic promise is fulfilled. Furthermore…
Embodied Inner Human Being
In this paper we take issue with George H. van Kooten’s recent argument that Paul’s concept of inner human being has a background in ancient philosophical treatises as a metaphor of the soul. We argue that its Greco-Roman physiological meaning was decisive in its adoption by Paul and that the split between ancient medicine and philosophy was not essential in antiquity. Ancient medical-philosophical texts did not focus on the core or center of a p…
Contested Spaces
An international group of archaeologists, art historians, and New Testament scholars investigate the function of spaces in Roman houses and temples in Pompeii, Herculaneum, Corinth, Rome, Ostia, Ephesus, and Judea. Their concern is more fully to understand the relationship between different architectural forms, Roman domus, villas, and insulae, in relation to Pauls letters and the gospels.

The interface of orality and writing
How did the visual, the oral, and the written interrelate in antiquity? The essays in this collection address the competing and complementary roles of visual media, forms of memory, oral performance, and literacy and popular culture in the ancient Mediterranean world. Incorporating both customary and innovative perspectives, the essays advance the frontiers of our understanding of the nature of ancient texts as regards audibility and performance,…

Images of Illness in the Gospel of Luke
Analyzing the illness-related terminology of the Gospel against the background of classical medical texts, Annette Weissenrieder examines the degree to which ancient medical knowledge was incorporated into the healing narratives of the Gospel of Luke. Thus, her work focuses on the crossroads of theology and medical history. Her primary reference is the Corpus Hippocraticum, supplemented by the writings of Soranus, Empedocles and Caelius Aurelianu…

How do visual images from the ancient world shed light on New Testament texts? In a methodologically multifaceted manner, the contributions in this volume examine early Christian images with regard to their ancient context. Various New Testament texts (the synoptic gospels, the Johannine and Pauline corpora) are linked to ancient visual images. Various approaches in iconography are summarized and applied to the interpretation of texts, taking acc…
