  • Sex Differences in Estimated Lean Body Mass of Captive and Wild Orangutans

    Open Access•Faye S Harwell, Janine L Brown et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Biological…•2026

  • Application of a parallel laser apparatus to measure forearms and flanges of wild Bornean orangutans ( Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii )

    Open Access•Ella R Brown, Timothy G Laman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2022

We constructed a parallel laser photogrammetry apparatus constructed from commercially available parts, and measured forearm lengths and flange widths of 16 wild Bornean orangutans. Our objectives were to validate our method and apparatus, discuss issues encountered, and construct preliminary growth curves. For adult males, we also compared flange width to forearm length as a way to investigate the relationship between body size and flange develo…

  • Wild Bornean orangutan ( Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii ) feeding rates and the Marginal Value Theorem

    Open Access•Andrea L DiGiorgio, Elizabeth M Upton et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2020

The Marginal Value Theorem (MVT) is an integral supplement to Optimal Foraging Theory (OFT) as it seeks to explain an animal's decision of when to leave a patch when food is still available. MVT predicts that a forager capable of depleting a patch, in a habitat where food is patchily distributed, will leave the patch when the intake rate within it decreases to the average intake rate for the habitat. MVT relies on the critical assumption that the…

  • Sociosexual behavioral patterns involving nulliparous female orangutans ( Pongo sp.) reflect unique challenges during the adolescent period

    Open Access•Caitlin A O'Connell, Tri Wahyu Susanto et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2020

The primate adolescent period is characterized by a series of changes in physiology, behavior, and social relationships. Orangutans have the slowest life history and the longest period of dependency of all primates. As members of a semisolitary species with high levels of sexual coercion, adolescent female orangutans face a unique combination of challenges when achieving independence from their mother. This study examined the mating behavior of a…

  • Are Male Orangutans a Threat to Infants? Evidence of Mother–Offspring Counterstrategies to Infanticide in Bornean Orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii)

    Open Access•Amy M Scott, Cheryl D Knott et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 65
