Mobilising care in the polycrisis: Framing eco-social activism in Hungary, Czechia, and Poland
In this article we explore how eco-social movements in Hungary, Czechia, and Poland mobilise care as a political and strategic framework in response to the interconnected crises of climate collapse, democratic erosion, and social inequality. In contrast to single-issue activism, we examine how care enables activists to build cross-movement coalitions, sustain engagement, and challenge depoliticised or technocratic approaches to change. Drawing on…

Rethinking Conceptualizations of Civil Societies in and beyond Post-Socialist Contexts
Based on an integrative review of research on European post-socialist civil societies over the past three decades, we critically examine: (1) how civil society is conceptualized and from whose position; (2) the methodologies employed in this knowledge production, including any reflections on the usefulness and conditions of such knowledge; and (3) existing knowledge gaps and areas where further development is needed within this body of literature…
The Kitchen‐Work of Collaborative Research: Recipes for Transformative Methodologies
Problems that collective actors struggle with require collaborative and transformative knowledge production to be solved. Despite the long tradition of participatory approaches in social science research, issues concerning collaborative methodologies are often located at the bottom of the knowledge hierarchy. We want to place them at the centre of social movement research, but also direct attention to the processes through which collaborative kno…
Informality as a safety net: Civic agency and the crisis of local governments in Hungary
Most research on post-socialist civil society has focused on analysing the characteristics that explain (the lack of) civic strength. Although recent research has highlighted the rise of urban activism, it has failed to look more closely at the agency of actors. By focusing on informal groups and their engagement in public affairs in the aftermath of the 2019 local elections in Hungary, this paper seeks to unravel the civic strategies and narrati…
Locked In: Reindustrialisation and the Production of Multiple Marginalities in an Old Mining Town of Hungary
This paper aims to unfold how peripheral reindustrialisation in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) produced multiple marginalities in local spaces. Relying on a cultural political economic (CPE) approach, we analyse how the imaginary of reindustrialisation encompassed the discourses on development and the strategies and practices of powerful agents of economic restructuring in an old mining town of Hungary, which entailed new dimensions and depths …
Társadalmi részvétel a városfejlesztésben: Változó szerepek Budapest tereinek alakításában
A társadalmi részvétel mindig is a kortárs városkutatások népszerű témája volt. A városfejlesztési beavatkozásokban a társadalmi részvételt általában a városi színtéren folyó konszenzuson vagy konfliktuson alapuló véleménynyilvánítási folyamatnak tekintik; a hazai vizsgálatok változatos megközelítési módokat alkalmaztak e mechanizmusok feltérképezésére. Jelen tanulmány a társadalmi részvételt a városi szintnél tágabb folyamatok eredményeként érte…

Cultivating food or cultivating citizens? On the governance and potential of community gardens in Amsterdam
A renaissance of community gardening is unfolding on a global urban scale. Scholars have analysed community gardening projects as empowering, contested or controlled spaces depending on the local governance networks in which, or despite of which, they emerge. Focusing on the political-economic context in which gardening activities emerge in Amsterdam, we present community gardens as places where the neoliberal localisation of the city unfolds. Ba…
