A (Plea) Offer You Can Refuse
Plea bargaining is ubiquitous in the United States, yet lack of data on rejected plea offers constrains empirical analysis. We compile novel data covering all initial plea offers for 23,000 felony cases in Philadelphia from 2012 to 2017. Our analysis yields three main insights. First, rejected initial offers are on average longer than eventual sentences, even for defendants convicted at trial. This contradicts the conventional trial penalty theor…
Prosecutorial Guidelines and Courtroom Workgroups
Prosecutor discretion significantly influences criminal case outcomes through charging decisions, plea bargaining, and sentencing recommendations. However, criminal case outcomes are also shaped by the interactions between judges and defense attorneys, who exercise their own discretion. Our study examines how internal prosecutorial guidelines that constrain discretion affect sentencing outcomes and case resolution types. We consider two distinct …
A kingdom with blackened teeth 2,000 years ago
Tooth blackening, the deliberate modification of teeth to achieve a lustrous black appearance, is well documented in modern Vietnam, but its ancient practice remains elusive. This study applies chemical analyses to Iron Age human teeth from the Dong Xa site in northern Vietnam, dated to approximately 2000 years ago. By integrating compositional results with ethnographic parallels and experimental controls, we identify a diagnostic signature of to…
Judges on the Benchmark
Judges receive limited information on how their sentencing practices contribute to inter-judge sentencing disparities which can undermine equity and the perceptions of legitimacy. We use doubly robust, internal benchmarking to measure the effect of each judge on sentencing outcomes relative to a set of cases that are handled by the judge’s peers and that are statistically similar on all observable case features. With the benchmarks, we can flag j…
Impact of defelonizing drug possession on recidivism
Research Summary California's Proposition 47 (Prop 47), passed in November 2014, sought to scale back punishment for selected drug and property offenses, making them misdemeanors rather than felonies. Although others have examined the impacts of Proposition 47 on crime rates, here we examine the impacts on a range of recidivism outcomes specifically for individuals convicted for drug possession offenses. We focus on the defelonization of drug pos…
Paternal Risk Factors for Oral Clefts in Northern Africans, Southeast Asians, and Central Americans
While several studies have investigated maternal exposures as risk factors for oral clefts, few have examined paternal factors. We conducted an international multi-centered case-control study to better understand paternal risk exposures for oral clefts (cases = 392 and controls = 234). Participants were recruited from local hospitals and oral cleft repair surgical missions in Vietnam, the Philippines, Honduras, and Morocco. Questionnaires were ad…

Dental phenotypic shape variation supports a multiple dispersal model for anatomically modern humans in Southeast Asia
Creative Writing
Creative Writing: Prose James Kyung-Jin Lee, Chair, Viet Nguyen, and Gina Apostol Gene Oishi said in a recent interview that it took him fifty years to write his first novel, which we honor today, and that it would likely take him another fifty years to compose another. “I’m eighty-one years old and a slow writer,” he explained only half jokingly. It was worth the wait. An historically important but aesthetically vibrant work, Fox Drum Bebop (Kay…
Juvenile Reentry and Aftercare Interventions
This study uses systematic review methods to investigate the use of mentoring programs to assist young people in successfully transitioning back into their communities following a juvenile correctional placement. Few studies were found that used comparison or control groups and measured recidivism outcomes. The results of the studies were mixed, with one study finding no differences between groups, and the other two studies finding some recidivis…
Nutrition and physical activity randomized control trial in child care centers improves knowledge, policies, and children’s body mass index
National Clinical Trials Number NCT01921842
Toxic metal levels in children residing in a smelting craft village in Vietnam
The results suggest that children in battery recycling and smelting craft villages in Vietnam are co-exposed to toxic metals. There is an urgent need for mitigation to control metal exposure related to domestic smelting
