Regions, regulation and the “carriers of history
This article examines how financial institutions functioned as “carriers of history” in the American South’s economic development through two pivotal transformations. Using an evolutionary economic geography framework, I argue that distinct monetary-financial arrangements created path-dependent trajectories that reshaped the region’s economic landscape. In the antebellum period, state-level banking regulations, unit banking and agricultural credi…
Schumpeter’s Gesetz and Gestalt in space
This paper argues that money and finance are not sufficiently integrated into the research agenda of evolutionary economic geography (EEG). I identify two dimensions of Joseph Schumpeter’s vision of the inherent instability of capitalism as promising for the EEG research agenda: First, the ‘law’ (Gesetz) of a disequilibrating role of credit creation and innovations in financial relations reveals the deeply ‘monetary character’ of his theory of de…
Crowdfunding the city
By raising money from a large number of people via the internet, crowdfunding offers the promise of a “democratization of finance”. Recently, the crowdfunding of large-scale urban projects appears to have gained traction as a handful of high-profile real estate and infrastructure projects are making headlines around the globe for relying on distributed-network online financing. Instead of their purported promise, this paper argues that large-scal…
Booming Bohemia? Evidence from the US High-Technology Industry
This paper assesses the effect of Richard Florida's creative class on economic growth and development at two levels of spatial aggregation. First, I examine the dynamics of economic growth across US metropolitan regions and investigate how they relate to regional specialization and the concentration of talent in the high-tech industry. In addition to evidence of significant high-tech clusters, I identify important complementarities with regard to…
Financial stability, the Basel Process and the new geography of regulation
The post-Bretton Woods era has witnessed the integration of the global financial system at an unprecedented pace. However, much of its institutional governance structure remains hinged on the old paradigm of national economies. Despite highly globalized financial mar-kets, I find evidence of substantial clustering in the context of regional financial activity. Addressing the regulatory challenges of globalization, the so-called ‘Basel Process ’ p…
