D printing and the geography of production
This paper explores the impact of 3D printing (3DP), a technology popularly described as being able to “produce (almost) anything from anywhere”, on the spatial organization of production. Although some scholars have theorized that 3DP may affect the location of manufacturing, empirical evidence on its implications for the spatial footprint of production activities remains limited. This study investigates how 3DP adoption, together with pre-exist…
Out of Sight? Revealing Creativity-Led Innovation in Rural Regions
Economic geography has offered several insights to understand the role of geography in shaping creativity, innovation, and the way they are connected in space. Unfortunately, most attention has been devoted to analyzing cities and urban regions as the ideal context where creativity and innovation come together. Emerging counternarratives are challenging this urban perspective and proposing that creativity-led innovation can also thrive in rural, …
Does crowdfunding foster rural entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurs in rural areas face much greater difficulties than those located in cities, also with respect to the access to entrepreneurial finance. Recent developments in the provision of capital, however, have opened new opportunities for small firms and start-ups to obtain funding. In this empirical work, I hypothesize that crowdfunding provides crucial resources and support for rural-based entrepreneurs and that rural areas characterized by …
How migrant inventors and informal institutions enable green innovation in EU regions
This paper investigates the relationship between migrant inventors, informal institutions and the development of green technologies in European regions. We argue that migrant inventors act as an unlocking mechanism that transfers external knowledge to host regions, and that informal institutions (i.e. social capital, migrant acceptance) mediate this effect. The work is based on an original dataset of migrant inventors covering 271 NUTS2 regions i…
Regional diversification and intra-regional wage inequality in the Netherlands
The literature has shown that related diversification in more complex industries enhances economic growth in regions but also inter-regional inequality. However, it has drawn little attention to the relationship between industrial dynamics (i.e., the rise and fall of industries) and intra-regional wage inequality. This explorative study examines the relationship between industry dynamics and wage inequality in NUTS-3 regions in the Netherlands in t…
The heterogeneous effects of trade agreements with labour provisions
Do trade agreements with labour provisions affect trade differently from those without such provisions? Are their effects heterogeneous with respect to the level of development of the countries involved and the labour intensity of goods traded? In this paper, we implement a state‐of‐the‐art structural gravity model with intranational (i.e. domestic) trade and allow for heterogeneous effects depending on the level of enforceability of labour provi…
Spatial structure and productivity in European regions
Through an analysis of total factor productivity for European regions using an econometric identification strategy, we find that significant impacts exist for both urban size and structure. A larger urban size positively affects regional productivity. Polycentric urban structures have no directly identified impacts on productivity. We find that an interaction between urban size and polycentricity has a negative effect, suggesting that polycentric…
Multinational enterprises, industrial relatedness and employment in European regions
This article investigates the link between multinational enterprises (MNEs) and employment in their host regions by cross-fertilising the literature on MNE externalities with the emerging body of research on industrial relatedness. The link between employment and MNE presence in the same and related industries is tested for European regions. The results suggest that cross-sectoral MNE spillovers are mediated through industrial relatedness and tha…
Between spilling over and boiling down
Productivity across European regions is related to three types of networks that mediate R&D-related knowledge spillovers: trade, co-patenting and geographical proximity. Both our panel and instrumental variable estimations for European regions suggest that network relations are crucial sources of R&D spillovers, but with potentially different features. Both import and co-patenting relations affect local productivity directly, but spillovers from …
Quality of government and social capital as drivers of regional diversification in Europe
Industrial diversification is crucial for economies to prosper. Recent studies have shown that regional economies tend to diversify into sectors that are related to those already present in the region. However, no study yet has investigated the impact of regional institutions. The objective of the article is to analyze how formal and informal institutions influence regional diversification. Studying 118 European regions in the period 2004-2012, w…
