Supporting infant-toddler educator beliefs and practices through the We Grow Together professional development system
Supporting Responsive Caregiving for the Youngest Children
Research Findings: The Quality of Care for Infants and Toddlers (QCIT) observational measure was designed to address the need for a valid and reliable measure of the quality of caregiver-child interactions that could be used in both center-based and family child care (FCC) settings, and with diverse populations. Results from a psychometric field test of 400 classrooms indicated that the QCIT demonstrated strong evidence of reliability and validit…

Head Start Teachers’ Professional Development, Well‐being, Attitudes, and Practices
Highlights The professional development supports available to teachers predicted higher job satisfaction and more math activities. Early care and education teachers’ curriculum support was related to more frequent math activities. Early care and education teachers’ mentoring support predicted more developmentally appropriate attitudes. Many types of professional development were not associated with teachers’ well‐being, attitudes, or practices. T…
Neighborhoods as a Developmental Context
Neighborhoods have been recognized in theory and research as an important context for child development. This study used data from the Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) and Census 2000 to assess the underlying factor structure and impact of neighborhood factors on child cognitive and behavioral outcomes, including the critical family and social factors that may mediate and/or moderate these relationships. Factor analyses foun…
Mother–Child Bookreading in Low-Income Families
About half of 2,581 low-income mothers reported reading daily to their children. At 14 months, the odds of reading daily increased by the child being firstborn or female. At 24 and 36 months, these odds increased by maternal verbal ability or education and by the child being firstborn or of Early Head Start status. White mothers read more than did Hispanic or African American mothers. For English-speaking children, concurrent reading was associat…
The Effectiveness of Early Head Start for 3-Year-Old Children and Their Parents
Early Head Start, a federal program begun in 1995 for low-income pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers, was evaluated through a randomized trial of 3,001 families in 17 programs. Interviews with primary caregivers, child assessments, and observations of parent-child interactions were completed when children were 3 years old. Caregivers were diverse in race-ethnicity, language, and other characteristics. Regression-adjusted impact …
Maternal depression and maternal treatment of siblings as predictors of child psychopathology
Maternal treatment of sibling pairs with affectively ill and well mothers was examined longitudinally in relation to child psychiatric status. Mothers and children in 77 families (34 unipolar, 16 bipolar, and 27 control mothers) were observed in interaction across early, middle, and late childhood and early adolescence. Interaction was assessed on dimensions of maternal engagement and critical-irritable behavior. The study examined the relative c…
