Marginal landscapes: A study of early medieval settlement preferences
This study explores the relationship between environment and rural settlement preferences in post-Roman Northwest Gaul, revealing a surprising concentration of settlements in marginal and wet environments. Using environmental classification, GIS analysis and a unique dataset, it reveals aspects of the socio-economic strategies of a rural population that has become relatively autonomous after the retreat of the Roman administration. These findings…
Reconstructing the Classical and Post‐Classical Agricultural Landscape of the Udhruh Qanat in Wādī al‐Fiqai, Southern Jordan
The cities of Petra and Udhruh were administrative and cultural centers in southern Jordan from Nabataean through Roman and Byzantine times into the early Islamic periods (first century BCE to eighth century CE ). These communities built water harvesting systems to be able to survive in this arid environment. Water harvesting was either based on the use of runoff, so‐called “green water”, or on subterranean collection of streamflow and groundwate…
Cutting Through the Green: A Case for Grassland Archaeology Using UAV Multispectral Data
Advances in low‐altitude remote sensing are needed to improve the effectiveness of archaeological prospection in the Netherlands. The geomorphological situation and land use history make applying various remote sensing and geophysical technologies particularly challenging. Technologies developed for precision agriculture have improved the field. However, the technology has yet to deliver reliable results when used in archaeological prospection in…
