  • Salinity Transition in the Ostia Lagoon During the Roman Period: Assessing the Feasibility of Salt Exploitation

Open Access•Cécile Vittori, Pierre Carbonel et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2026•References: 44

This study examines long‐term salinity changes in the Ostia Lagoon between the 4th century cal BC and the 6th century cal AD , with emphasis on their implications for ancient salt production. Although Ostia's foundation is closely linked to the control of salt resources in the Tiber Delta, direct archaeological evidence of Roman‐period saltworks is scarce. To address this gap, this study combines micropalaeontological analysis of ostracod assembl…

  • An Insight into Gandharan Art: Materials and Techniques of Polychrome Decoration

    Open Access•Anna Lluveras‐Tenorio, Alessia Andreotti et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Gandharan art developed in the Himalayan area in the early centuries CE. It has been investigated mostly from an iconographic point of view, missing, until very recently, a systematic technical investigation of materials and techniques. Recently our team began performing chemical analyses of the traces of the polychromy originally covering statues, reliefs and architectural decorations, to discover the ancient painting techniques and artistic tec…

  • Provenance of the Transparent Gypsum Crystals ( Lapis Specularis ) and Gypsum Mortars in the Windows from the Churches of Rome: S. Sabina sull’Aventino and S. Giorgio al Velabro

Stefano Lugli, Matteo REGHIZZI et al.•ARTICLE•Hortus Artium Medievalium•2020

The latest example of the traditional Roman use of lapis specularis crystals in windows panels instead of glass are represented by the Paleochristian- Early Medieval churches of Rome. The churches of S. Sabina sull’Aventino and S. Giorgio al Velabro were characterized by some of the most ancient examples of windows frameworks built using gypsum mortar. The light was penetrating the panels throughout openings covered by two or more embricated gyps…

A Brunetto, Andre Tessainer Brunetto et al.•ARTICLE•Hortus Artium Medievalium•2020

The Early-Medieval window-transennas from the paleochristian Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome were recently object of a conservation project at Istituto Centrale per il Restauro. Discovered by Antonio Munoz at the beginning of the XX century, they here fixed them on wooden boards with screws. The boards were hanged on the wall of the portico and later recovered in the depots of the Basilica’s Museum. Conservation work is currently being carried o…

Open Access•Andrea Carbonara, Simona Pannuzi et al.•ARTICLE•Mélanges de l École française de…•2018•Cited by: 1

  • Long‐Term Interactions between the Roman City of Ostia and Its Paleomeander, Tiber Delta, Italy

    Open Access•Ferréol Salomon, Jean‐philippe Goiran et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 6

This study examines the long‐term interactions between the well‐known Roman city of Ostia and a river meander. Located at the mouth of the Tiber river, Ostia was a major harbor city that connected Rome to the Mediterranean Sea. Based on aerial photography and borehole analysis, the paleodynamics of the Fiume Morto's paleomeander are understood to be linked to the urban evolution of the city of Ostia. Four periods of evolution have been identified…
