  • Characterisation of rock varnish at Murujuga (Western Australia)

    Open Access•John Fairweather, Ying-Li Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•References: 63

The aim of this study is to describe the textural, chemical, mineralogical and microbiome characteristics of rock (desert) varnish and assess its potential as a paleoclimate archive, with particular attention to the challenges of reconstructing climate variability in Northwest Australia. Rock samples from Murujuga (Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia) with visible varnish were collected from Rosemary Island, the Burrup Peninsula and Dolphin Is…

  • Soil wetting and drying processes influence stone artefact distribution in clay‐rich soils

Open Access•Caroline Mather, Matthias Leopold et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 78

Soils that contain swelling clay minerals (e.g., montmorillonite) expand and contract during wetting and drying, causing movement within the soil profile. This process, known as argilliturbation, can alter artefact distributions, destroy stratigraphy and complicate the interpretation of archaeological deposits. Our study investigates the influence of argilliturbation on stone artefact distribution in a clay‐rich sediment basin on Middle Gidley Is…

  • The first radiometric Pleistocene dates for Aboriginal occupation at Weld Range, inland Mid West, Western Australia

Vicky Winton, Viviene Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 18

We present the results of radiometric dating at Yalibirri Mindi Rockshelter located in the Weld Range, Mid West region, Western Australia. A sequence of three Pleistocene dates from charcoal found in association with flaked stone artefacts and with a basal date of 29,089 ± 132 years uncal. BP (D-AMS 009920) provides the first evidence for Pre-Last Glacial Maximum occupation of the inland Mid West. Sedimentological analyses strongly support the an…
