Policy sandboxes for autonomous transportation in controlled environments: Evidence and insights from open-pit mining operations
While the deployment of autonomous vehicles in complex urban settings remains constrained by safety bottlenecks and regulatory conservatism, controlled environments that are characterized by spatial confinement, centralized management, and high operational demand, have emerged as ideal sandboxes for accelerating policy and technological maturity. Among these, Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS) in open-pit mining is one of the most mature and real-w…
Associations between 24-h movement behaviors and optimal mental health of Chinese university students: A compositional data analysis
This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the associations between the 24-h movement behaviors and mental health among university students in China, and to determine the optimal behavioral balance based on the top 5% of model-predicted mental health outcomes using compositional data analysis. A total of 6,084 university students aged 17–24 years in Southwest China self-reported their daily durations of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical ac…
Mechanisms of immunity in Octavia Butler’s Clay’s Ark, Kindred and Dawn
This paper examines the immunological characteristics embedded in Octavia Butler’s works, focusing on how these mechanisms manifest in treating ‘nonself’ across three levels: genetically mutated hybrids, racial minorities, and extraterrestrial aliens. By analysing Butler’s novels Clay’s Ark, Kindred and Dawn, the paper explores how autoimmunity, adaptive immunity, and innate immunity operate within her narratives to enforce boundaries between the…
The relationship between socioeconomic status and organized sports participation among Chinese children and adolescents: The chain-mediated role of parental physical exercise and parental support
Socioeconomic status not only directly influences organized sports participation among children and adolescents but also indirectly influences organized sports participation through parental physical exercise and parental support. This study posits that reducing socioeconomic status disparities in organized sports participation among children and adolescents requires not only a focus on children and adolescents of lower socioeconomic status but a…
Accumulation patterns of sedentary and breaks and adiposity risk in Chinese children and adolescents: A latent profile analysis
Different accumulation patterns of SED and breaks were identified for children and adolescents in China. Among them, "MVPA breakers" and "Breakers" are most beneficial to maintain a normal weight status. Health promotion efforts could consider increasing MVPA and decreasing SED time for children and restricting SED to at least 30 min for adolescents to improve their adiposity indicators
Optimal coordinated congestion pricing for multiple regions: A surrogate-based approach
Congestion pricing is one of the efficient travel demand management strategies. Many existing researches focus on dealing with the toll optimization problem for a single area. However, the urban network is often composed of several administrative regions. Furthermore, even inside a single administrative region, there may be multiple subnetworks with different traffic dynamics. As a result, the centric pricing scheme may not be applicable. This pa…
Human Adenovirus Associated Hepatic Injury
Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a common virus, but the infections it causes are relatively uncommon. At the same time, the methods for the detection of HAdV are varied, among which viral culture is still the gold standard. HAdV infection is usually self-limited but can also cause clinically symptomatic in lots of organs and tissues, of which human adenovirus pneumonia is the most common. In contrast, human adenovirus hepatitis is rarely reported. How…

Occurrence of Aflatoxin M1 in Raw Milk from Manufacturers of Infant Milk Powder in China
This survey was performed to investigate the occurrence of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) contamination of raw milk from manufacturers of infant milk powder in China. A total of 1207 raw milk samples were collected overall from four seasons of 2016 in Northeast China, Northwest China, Northern China, and Central China (11 provinces and one municipality). Results showed that 56 of the 1207 raw milk samples (4.64%) were positive for AFM1, which were obtained …
A Survey of Naturally-Occurring Steroid Hormones in Raw Milk and the Associated Health Risks in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, China
In recent years, high levels of hormone residue in food, capable of damaging the health of consumers, have been recorded frequently. In this study, 195 raw milk samples were obtained from Tangshan City, China, and the concentrations of 22 steroid hormones were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Cortisol was detected in 12.5% of raw milk samples (mean 0.61 μg/kg; range: <limit of quantificatio…
Emerging networks in the global news arena: Theorizing the structural role of Chinese bridge blogs
In this article, we present a theoretical approach to conceptualizing the global news arena as a structure of relations formed across media systems worldwide, relations mapped by hyperlinked connections across online news platforms, including professional news sites, blogs, and other social media. Specifically, we argue that bridge blogs serve as the ‘weak ties’ (in Granovetter’s terms), linking cultural spheres formed by the ‘strong ties’ among …
A Matter of Life and Death: Examining how newspapers covered the newspaper “crisis”
During 2008–2010, US newspapers covered the financial issues confronting their own industry extensively. Such coverage drew attention to the state of the newspaper but also raised questions about whether journalists over-reacted to this market downturn. This study examines how the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and the New York Times framed the newspaper “crisis.” Results show that coverage focused on short-term drama over long-term trends, lack…
Measuring Work Environment and Performance in Nursing Homes
BACKGROUND: Qualitative studies of the nursing home work environment have long suggested that attributes such as leadership and communication may be related to nursing home performance, including residents' outcomes. However, empirical studies examining these relationships have been scant. OBJECTIVES: This study is designed to develop an instrument for measuring nursing home work environment and perceived work effectiveness; test the reliability …
Issue Publics on the Web: Applying Network Theory to the War Blogosphere
This study had two primary objectives. The first was to examine the predictors of preferential attachment in the war blog network. A multiple regression analysis revealed use of links to blogs and original reporting content as significant predictors of incoming links. Second, the war blogosphere was mapped to reveal two distinct halves, the liberal and the conservative. Measures of network centrality identified key blogs, some of which served as …
