What Are Media? A Hedonic Model for the Second Digital Convergence
Key questions for media scholarship hinge on defining its object: What are media today? What are media industries and companies? Traditionally, media activities were viewed as binary—either media or not. However, in a second wave of digital convergence, media-related activities permeate many economic activities, raising delineation questions. To address this, we propose a model and empirical approach to measure the degrees of involvement in vario…
Managerial and Economic Factors Affecting Science Journalism in Qatar
This article uses the Hierarchy of Influences model (Shoemaker and Reese 1996; 2014) to analyze results of a 2021-2022 study of science journalism in Qatar. The study extends the HoI model by incorporating the role of corresponding and contradictory interests when assessing findings across the five levels of the model. Empirical data were collected in semi-structured interviews with 15 Qatar-based journalists and editors. The findings clarify per…
News coverage of scientific discoveries in Qatar
The study analyzes 429 news articles from six local newspapers and interviews with 15 journalists and editors to assess the state of local science journalism in Qatar. Despite significant investments in scientific infrastructure, local science news has not kept pace, with most stories sourced from foreign agencies and lacking contextual relevance. This is due to a science-unfriendly news culture where local science is not seen as newsworthy for t…

Integrating media clusters and value networks
We argue that there is scholarly potential in linking theory on industry clusters with theory on value networks. To date, these two theoretical streams have developed largely in parallel, limiting understanding of how the two are integrated in practice. By considering these theories in combination and the unique context of creative industries, we generate insight on the management of clusters as value networks. Our ongoing longitudinal empirical …

Questioning media management scholarship
Media management scholarship has achieved increasing maturity in recent years. While acknowledging significant accomplishment, the essay provides a critical assessment to stimulate discourse in the field about what is needed to achieve next stage development in theorisation and relevance for practice. The authors present four parables to illustrate the importance of what they suggest: (1) benefitting societies as well as media industries, and thu…
Ensuring public service news provision in the era of networked communications
The authors argue the continuing importance of public service values for journalistic practice and news provision in the emerging context of networked communications. Divergent perspectives regarding the economic viability of news production in for-profit and nonprofit sectors are reviewed, in application to two categories of media organizations: legacy media and digital native media. The authors assess the contemporary situation for news firms i…

Heritage Brand Management in Public Service Broadcasting
Growing complexity in branding literature reflects increasing maturity in scholarship and disagreement about how branding works and what matters most. The difficulty is partly due to complexity and partly to what Brown (2006: 50) characterised as ‘logorrhoea where the target word is becoming increasingly festooned with add-ons and modifiers’. Hulberg (2006) conducted a comprehensive literature review and found two schools of thought. These keywor…

Public Service Broadcasting as Cultural Industry
Value transformation in Finland's public service broadcasting company, Yleisradio Oy (YLE), is analysed as a professional market connected with political, popular and open markets. Innovative change in creative tension with traditional continuity informs a transformation dynamic. Prior to the 1990s continuity was a dominant force, but rapid change is characteristic today. The 1994 administrative restructuring was an organizational response to the…
