Building the Science News Agenda
The current study examines the influence of press releases about scientific studies in terms of their impact on news coverage. Using an innovative approach that allowed for analysis of a large corpus of text and calculation of similarity scores, we were able to trace the uptake of press release materials into news media articles. In some cases, up to 65% of sentences in science news articles reflected high similarity to press release material—a p…
Before the Environment Was News
Outdoor writing is a little respected and often forgotten genre of American newsmaking. Widely popular in the early to middle twentieth century, outdoor journalists presented a blend of factuality with personal narrative and advocacy for environmental preservation as they told stories of fishing, hunting, and the outdoors more broadly in columns tucked away in the sports section. Outdoor columns were the single most consistent source of environme…
The Handbook of International Trends in Environmental Communication
The aim of this chapter is to present and comment on the scientific literature on environmental communication published in French. We focused on a part of the so-called “francophonie,” the French-speaking world. The aim is to continue the inquiry started in Catellani, Malibabo and Pascual (2019), in order to present the internal features and dynamic of the research works published in French. This work aims at doing for the French-speaking world w…
Journalism as an Advocacy Tool
Environmental nongovernmental organizations faced unprecedented opportunities after public interest in environmental issues exploded in the 1960s. Drawing on the official archives of the Wilderness Society, the Sierra Club, and the National Audubon Society, this study demonstrates how these organizations redeveloped their publications to take advantage of newfound public interest and political opportunities in the 1960s through the 1980s. The org…
Three Dimensions of Social Media Messaging Success by Environmental NGOs
Studies show that NGOs persist in using social media to impart unidirectional messages rather than taking advantage of the participatory nature of networked media. Fear of a loss of message control may be at the heart of NGOs’ desire to keep social media messages on track. The current study examines the success of an environmental NGO in keeping its social media messages under control using quantitative content analysis of an NGO-promoted hashtag…
The Pope, Politics, and Climate Change
News coverage of climate change has expanded beyond a focus on science to include stories relating the topic to religion, particularly following Pope Francis’ 2015 call for Catholics to address climate change as a moral responsibility. We tested how effective Pope Francis is as a messenger on the topic of climate change. A 2 (Pope: present or absent in the story) X 2 (news story topic: climate change or poverty) between-subjects experiment ( N = …
The Pope May Not Be Enough
As a rise in anti-elite populist sentiment becomes an increasingly notable object of study in political realms, it is important to also consider how populism operates outside the electoral sphere. Americans’ support for climate change-related policy has been understood primarily in a political affiliation context, with Democrats likely to support such policy and Republicans likely not to. However, populist beliefs cross ideological divides. Study…
On the Field of Environmental Communication
Curated journalism
Studies of environmental communication have primarily focused on environmental journalism produced in commercial newsrooms. Yet environmental non-governmental organizations have been producing journalism in their publications for more than a century. This study takes a field theory approach to situate this production within the journalistic and non-governmental organization fields. It finds that environmental journalists who write for non-governm…
From ignored to banner story
The hierarchy of influences model has been used to examine sociological influences on journalistic output originating from both inside and outside the newsroom. While providing useful snapshots of journalistic practice, studies using the hierarchical model have rarely accounted for changes in newsgathering over time. This study examines the emergence of climate journalism in the Philippines, one of the most vulnerable nations to the effects of cl…
