Pastoral predicaments: The Gujars in history
This article investigates the growing marginality of pastoralism using the Gujar agitation of 2007-08 in India as a point of entry. Kings versus Bandits: Anti-colonialism in a Bandit Narrative
Debate and controversy have bedevilled the subject of social banditry. The early writing on social banditry saw it as primitive rebellion, as prepolitical and antithetical to class consciousness. This paper challenges the preeminence of the Self-Other binary in contemporary social theory. The opposition not only pervades the field of cultural studies, it also dominates disciplines such as historiography and anthropology and the burgeoning work on ethnicity.
