  • Family meals and adolescent perceptions of parent–child connectedness

    Open Access•Stephen L Brown, James Teufel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Studies•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Affirming parent–child interactions, leading to Parent–Child Connectedness (PCC), may provide protective factors that support positive adolescent behaviors and health outcomes; shared family meals are thought to reinforce these interactions. Eight hundred and fifty-five adolescents, ages 9–13, attending six health education centers in the US were surveyed regarding their attitudes about selected interactions they share with their parents. This st…

  • Social, Economic and Environmental Capital: Corporate Citizenship in a New Economy

    Open Access•David Birch•ARTICLE•Alternative Law Journal•2002•References: 1

Corporate Citizenship as a concept has been with us for many years now, but the 1990s saw a revitalisation of its main themes and issues, particularly around corporate social responsibility, business/community partnerships and social auditing/accountability. More recently, moves have been made, mostly in Europe, to reposition corporate citizenship more fully into new economics thinking. This paper examines this thinking and the effects this may h…

  • Asia: Cultural Politics in the Global Age

David Birch, Sanjay Srivastava et al.•BOOK•Asia•2001

  • Transnational Cultural Studies: What Price Globalisation

    David Birch•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 6

One of the most significant aspects of globalisation has been the developing focus upon local resistances, of various types, and the ways in which these resistances seek to carve out specific spaces that both maintain and construct cultural difference. Performing cultural studies in those spaces, particularly those not determined by the philosophical and ideological underpinnings of cultural theories that are traditionally highly resistant to ort…

    Open Access•Terence Lee, David Birch•ARTICLE•Media International Australia•2000•Cited by: 8•References: 8

  • Constructing Asian values: National identities and ‘responsible citizens

    David Birch•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 16

The issue of ‘value’ is one that often falls off the cultural studies agenda, but from time to time, events, like the recent debates on Asian values, and the currency crises in Southeast Asia, demand that a cultural studies approach to understanding events in Asia should engage with the articulation of values within cultural, political, social and economic contexts which variously define the ways in which citizenship might be constructed. This pa…

    Open Access•David Birch•ARTICLE•Media International Australia•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Communication policy in Asia has been, and is likely to remain, a highly exclusive, non-participatory, localised means of expressing and maintaining power and control. If it defines democracy, it defines a very different and limited one compared to the ideal envisioned, for example, by Habermas. This paper explores some of the issues involved, particularly with respect to communication policy studies in Asia, and argues for an approach to the dev…

  • Contingent Delay versus Noncontingent Delay during Acquisition and Extinction

    Open Access•Thomas Clifford, David Birch•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

Three groups of rats were first trained with food and then extinguished in a runway. Running terminated either in no delay, bar pressing at FR16, or a delay equal to the time required for bar pressing. Terminal acquisition running speeds were ordered, from fastest to slowest, as the ordering of groups above. Extinction proceeded at about the same rate from each of the three terminal acquisition levels

  • Incentive Effects and Competing Response Models

    Open Access•David Birch, Fred P Valle•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

One or 10 pellets of food in the goal box provided two levels of incentive and a 1- or 4-in. gap, adjacent to the start box, defined two degrees of antagonistic instrumental responses to the approach down a runway. Three groups of hungry rats, (1L-3S), (2L-2S), and (3L-1S), differed in the ratio of large- to small-gap trials throughout 124 days of training at 1 trial per day. The major findings were no G × I interaction for response speed in any …
