Understanding Journalists’ Responses to Occupational Harassment and Intimidation through the Lens of Cognitive Appraisal Theory
Journalists increasingly face work-related harassment and intimidation, yet individuals vary markedly in how they interpret and respond to such encounters. Although prior research has documented this variation, the broader scholarship has offered limited insight into the processes through which it emerges and the factors that contribute to it. This article draws on cognitive appraisal theory to examine how journalists evaluate incidents of harass…
Using the Diary–Interview Method with Time-Constrained Professionals: The Case of Journalists and Harassment
This article presents a methodological reflection on the diary–interview method’s value and application when used with professionals whose schedules are both demanding and unpredictable, drawing on the authors’ insights from a study examining the harassment and intimidation of journalists.
Harassed for Their Job: Exploring Factors That Render Journalists Prone to Harassment and Intimidation
Amid growing concern over harassment and intimidation targeting journalists, scholarly attention to their occurrence and implications has mushroomed. One aspect of these phenomena that often gets overlooked is that not all journalists seem equally targeted or affected. Applying ordinal regression analysis of 505 sets of questionnaire responses from Finnish professional journalists, the authors found that only a small proportion of respondents exp…

Ulkoinen vaikuttaminen ja sen vastakeinot suomalaisessa journalismissa
Journalismin autonomiaan ja journalisteihin kohdistuvat uhat ovat viime vuosina nousseet uudella tavalla näkyviksi Suomen julkisessa keskustelussa. Tutkimusta aiheesta on kuitenkin tehty vähän. Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee laadullisesti suomalaisten journalistien kokemuksia ulkoisesta vaikuttamisesta ja journalistien vaikuttamisen torjumiseen käyttämiä vastakeinoja. Ulkoiseksi vaikuttamiseksi määritellään kaikki sellaiset aktiiviset menetelmät, joi…
