Circulating health rumors in the ‘Arab World
The Internet provides great opportunity for news as well as entertainment. One such use is to keep abreast of public health concerns. As news outlets’ websites give the audience the privilege of interacting and posting comments as an ‘anonymous user’ following the posted story, these initial comments trigger further comments—which can lead to speculation, rumor, and inaccurate information. The purpose of the current study was to compare one year …
Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya framing of the Israel–Palestine conflict during war and calm periods
This framing study compares Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya coverage of the Israel–Palestine conflict during the 2008/2009 Gaza conflict and one year later, during a period of calm. Findings suggest that both networks used framing mechanisms to highlight Palestinian perspectives over Israeli ones and frame Palestinians as victims of Israeli aggression. An online survey was conducted with Egyptian users who visited commercial websites. A total of 296 people responded to an Arabic survey that questioned the reasons they use commercial websites as well as what gratifications they obtain from the experience. Education level and type of job were found to be significant predictors of commercial website use. Social interaction and information gathering were found to be key predictors of how long a res…

Approximately 360 undergraduate students in the U.S. and Egypt were surveyed regarding their consumption of music videos, affinity for them, and perception of them as reality. Respondent's parasocial interaction with their favorite music video performers was also assessed. Results showed that Egyptian young adults consume significantly greater amounts of music videos than their American counterparts. A similar effect was noted with Muslims versus…
Identifying with Arabic Journalists
Al-Jazeera typifies the West’s perception of the new Arab satellite news channel. Seemingly rising from out of nowhere, the fledgling Al-Jazeera satellite news channel took a western-style cable news format and adapted it to the cultural perspectives of a Middle Eastern audience. As a result, it has become one of the most popular news channels with people in the Middle East and Arab expatriates around the world. One reason for this popularity may…
Locus of Control, Parasocial Interaction and Usage of Radio or TV Ministry Programs
In this exploratory study, 191 students at a Deep Southern university were surveyed about their locus ofcontrol and use of religious media. Given that this was the first research into the relationship between this personality trait and religious media use, only research questions were advanced on this subject. Questions were raised as to whether internally or externally-oriented individuals would use religious media more extensively, have greater…
