  • Black and white in colour: Looking across race in Spike Lee’s Clockers and Summer of Sam

Thomas Austin•ARTICLE•New Review of Film and Television…•2025

This essay focuses on two films by Spike Lee: Clockers (1995), adapted from the novel of the same name by the Jewish New York crime writer Richard Price, and Summer of Sam (1999), for which Lee revised an initial script by two Italian Americans, Victor Colicchio and Michael Imperioli. • Crime Scenes: Landscape, Memory and Atrocity in Jorge Barbi’s El Final, Aquí

    Open Access•Thomas Austin•ARTICLE•Photography and Culture•2021

Jorge Barbi’s book El Final, Aquí (The End, Here) is a collection of 60 beautifully composed, predominantly rural and always uninhabited landscapes taken throughout Spain. All the images share a common secret: these remote locations are crime scenes, out of the way places where Republicans were executed by Francoists during or after the Spanish Civil War. Barbi states: ‘Places are not witnesses of anything, places do not see us; we recreate them …

  • Unmasked: Notes on Joan de la Malla’s “The Sad Clown”

    Thomas Austin•ARTICLE•Photography and Culture•2019

In this brief analysis of Joan de la Malla’s photograph ‘The Sad Clown’, winner of the photojournalism prize at the 2018 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, I focus on how the image sets off a series of movements towards and away from the common trope of anthropomorphism, exploring how it works to expose, confound and then re-install this familiar device

  • Interiority, identity and the limits of knowledge in documentary film

    Thomas Austin•ARTICLE•Screen•2016•References: 3

In the cinema, as Marian Keane has noted, ‘the medium of film – and specifically the camera – takes the nature of human interiority as its fundamental subject’. Keane is writing about fiction film, where scripted dialogue, actor performance and codifications presented by mise-en-scene, framing, camera movement, editing patterns, lighting and music typically offer cues to characters’ states of mind and emotions. But these resources are not always …

  • The Effect of Legal and Extra‐Legal Variables on the Recommending and Granting of a Pardon

    Open Access•Thomas Austin, Don Hummer•ARTICLE•Law & Policy•2000•Cited by: 1

A familiar but little studied area of criminal justice is that of pardons. Using data from the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons, the decision‐making process is examined to determine the degree of correspondence between the board’s recommendation and the governor’s decision to grant or deny a pardon. Included in the analysis is an assessment of the relative impact of legal and extra‐legal variables on the decision‐making process. The paper concludes …
