The Role of Syndicated Content in Retaining Digital Newspaper Subscribers: Evidence from Clickstream and Subscription Data
Syndicated content from news agencies remains a pivotal component of newspaper coverage. Especially for smaller local/regional news organizations with limited resources, syndicated content helps them deliver important news that is beyond their capabilities. However, research on syndicated content has heavily focused on its potentially negative impact such as content homogenization or extensive news recycling (i.e., churnalism) from the production…
The role of social media news usage and platforms in civic and political engagement: Focusing on types of usage and platforms
How mobile users respond to pre-roll skippable advertising differently than personal computer (PC) users: An analysis of individual-level clickstream data
Mobile devices have evolved as a major channel for online video consumption. With the growth of online video platforms, various ad formats have been experimented to increase advertising effectiveness. One such attempt is pre-roll skippable ads that allow users to skip an ad after watching it for a few seconds. Despite pre-roll ads providing better user experience, their high skipping rate is alarming to advertisers and brands. Recent studies reve…
Distrust Profiles: Identifying the Factors That Shape Journalism’s Credibility Crisis
Trust in news is declining globally and has been for some time a phenomenon that has been amplified in the context of a global pandemic, the rise in anti-media populism, and social and political unrest. Overall, public trust in journalism remains low (44% globally), according to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2021 . Building on a growing body of research on predictors of (dis)trust among news audiences, this study examines survey data …
An Integrative Approach to Determinants of Pre-Roll Ad Acceptance and Their Relative Impact: Evidence from Big Data
Skippable ads are known to provide better advertising experiences by giving viewers a sense of control with the ability to skip an ad after watching it for a few seconds. Despite the growing interest, few studies have investigated factors that influence skipping or viewership of pre-roll skippable ads. This study examines the determinants of pre-roll ad acceptance by using clickstream data of 2,078,090 users’ ad and content viewing behaviors on a…
An Integrative Approach to Social Media News Sharing: The Role of Individual and Situational Factors
This study examines how individual and situational factors within the social media environment influence different types of news sharing, namely, informative, relational, and expressive sharing. Methodologically, this study uses survey data collected from a representative sample of South Korean media users by Nielsen Company Korea. We found the differential role individual and situational factors play in different types of social media news shari…
Automatically Detecting Image–Text Mismatch on Instagram with Deep Learning
Visual social media have emerged as an essential brand communication channel for advertisers and brands. The active use of hashtags has enabled advertisers to identify customers interested in their brands and better understand their consumers. However, some users post brand-incongruent content—for example, posts composed of brand-irrelevant images with brand-relevant hashtags. Such visual information mismatch can be problematic because it hinders…
Factors Influencing Emergency Department Nurses’ Compliance with Standard Precautions Using Multilevel Analysis
Standard precautions protect patients and nurses from infection. Nevertheless, compliance with standard precautions is lower among emergency department nurses than other nurses. We examined the individual and organizational factors that influence emergency department nurses' compliance with standard precautions via a cross-sectional study. A self-reported questionnaire survey was administered to 140 nurses working in nine emergency departments in…
Digital News Readership and Subscription in the United States during Covid-19: A Longitudinal Analysis of Clickstream and Subscription Data from a Local News Site
The COVID-19 pandemic created a unique opportunity where local news sites play an essential role in their readers' lives. Whether this increased level of news readership will help save the business of local journalism is a question that journalism scholars and professionals seek to answer. We propose a framework that demonstrates the relationships between local news consumption experiences, reading behaviours, and audience retention. We analysed …
Unequal Futures: ‘Dreams’ of Adolescents as Status Markers

From Purchasing Exposure to Fostering Engagement: Brand–Consumer Experiences in the Emerging Computational Advertising Landscape
Over the past 40 years, we have witnessed seismic shifts in advertising planning and buying processes. Due in no small part to the emergence of digital media, consumer choices have mushroomed, while advertisers understand much more about target audiences. Advertising activities have been drastically transformed by the possibilities that technology creates for targeting and measurement, automation of activities via programmatic advertising, and an…
Improve Trust, Increase Loyalty? Analyzing the Relationship Between News Credibility and Consumption
As the news industry continues its ongoing struggle for financial stability, many now believe news publishers must shift from advertising- to audience-supported revenue models to survive. Yet those advocating for this transition believe it can only succeed if news organizations first improve their credibility among the public. This belief stems from two underlying assumptions: (1) trust in journalism is severely diminished throughout the world, a…
A repertoire approach to cross-platform media use behavior
Media users receive an overwhelmingly large supply of media content from multiple media, yet much research on media use examines the use of a single medium. This study investigates patterns of media use across multiple media platforms by taking a media repertoire approach. Using single-source data that merge television peoplemeter data and a survey on other media use of the same respondents, this study identifies five distinctive media repertoire…
