  • When your participants cannot speak”: Exploring the potential for participatory mapping to represent the geographies of more‐than‐human actors

    Open Access•Ayla De Grandpré, Jon M Corbett et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2025•References: 37

This study examines the use of participatory mapping as a method to represent the values of non‐human entities (more‐than‐humans) in socio‐ecological landscapes. This research seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical developments in more‐than‐human geographies and their practical landscape‐level applications. Through a combination of literature review, as well as participatory mapping interviews and focus groups conducted with 28 participants …

    Open Access•Jon Corbett•ARTICLE•Digital humanities quarterly•2023

In this article, I discuss my project Ancestral Code, which consists of an integrated development environment (IDE) and the Nehiyaw (Plains Cree) based programming languages called Cree# (pronounced: Cree-Sharp) and ᐊᒋᒧ (âcimow). These languages developed in response to western perspectives on human-computer relationships, which I challenge and reframe in Nehiyaw/Indigenous contexts

  • Mapping Change in Canada’s Local News Landscape: An Investigation of Research Impact on Public Policy

April Lindgren, Jon Corbett et al.•ARTICLE•Digital Journalism•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 6

This study investigates whether the Local News Map, a crowdsourced digital tool that tracks changes to local news outlets, influenced policy making that resulted in new government supports for Canadian journalism. It demonstrates how scholarly research informs government decision making and identifies a more nuanced approach to tracking research impact at a time when funders are increasingly demanding evidence that research dollars are well spent…

  • Downscaling: Understanding the influence of open data initiatives in smaller and mid‐sized cities in British Columbia, Canada

    Open Access•Mark Gill, Jon Corbett•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 21

Key Messages Current open data evaluation tools do not pay enough attention to the usability of open data portals. Access to open data is hindered by the design, usability, and content of open data websites. Population size is not a factor in determining the efficacy of open data initiatives

  • Searching for social justice in GIScience publications

Logan Cochrane, Jon Corbett et al.•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Maps are explicitly positioned within the realms of power, representation, and epistemology; this article sets out to explore how these ideas are manifest in the academic Geographic Information Science (GIScience) literature. We analyze 10 years of literature (2005–2014) from top tier GIScience journals specific to the geoweb and geographic crowdsourcing. We then broaden our search to include three additional journals outside the technical GIScie…

  • Doing Public Participation on the Geospatial Web

Roy Sieber, Renée E Sieber et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 56

The emergence of Web 2.0, open source software tools, and geosocial networks, along with associated mobile devices and available government data, is widely considered to have altered the nature and processes of place-based digital participation. Considerable theorizing has been dedicated to the geographic version of Web 2.0, the geospatial Web (Geoweb). To assess the theories, we draw on four years of empirical work across Canada that considers t…

  • Maintaining the Integrity of Indigenous Knowledge; Sharing Metis Knowing Through Mixed Methods

Open Access•Peter James Hutchinson, Carlene Dingwall et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Critical…•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Working collaboratively with Indigenous populations necessitates a focus on partnerships at the core of sharing, implementing and disseminating Indigenous knowledge. The Tri-Council Policy 2 ISSN: ISSN 1837-0144 © International Journal of Critical Indigenous Studies Statement (CIHR, 2010) notes that respectful, reciprocal and ethical research standards must be applied to research with Indigenous communities. Métis collaborators identified that re…

  • Living a Long Way from Home: Communicating Land-related Knowledge in Dispersed Indigenous Communities, an Alternative Approach

    Stine Barlindhaug, Jon Corbett•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Many indigenous communities are at a crossroads as regards lived experience of traditional livelihoods and members with intimate knowledge of their traditional landscapes. Using case studies from two indigenous communities, this article explores the application of both GIS tools and other geographic multimedia in community-based research projects that document landscape-related knowledge. The study involves a First Nation community in British Col…

  • An Analytical Framework to Examine Empowerment Associated with Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PGIS)

Jon M Corbett, Jon Corbett et al.•ARTICLE•Cartographica The International…•2005

Claims have been made that the application of participatory geographic information systems (PGIS) can empower disadvantaged groups. This article notes that the ongoing debate in this “GIS-empowerment-marginalization nexus” remains vague about a characterization of empowerment and that it fails to address how empowerment can be observed and recorded in a logical and structured manner. The article offers, and justifies, two working definitions of e…

  • Player Perspective: Using Computer Game Engines for 3D Cartography

Jon Corbett, Kevin Wade et al.•ARTICLE•Cartographica The International…•2005

In 1987, the National Science Foundation–sponsored report on Visualization in Scientific Computing (ViSC) recognized the potential for computers to revolutionize the way that we visualize information (McCormick, DeFanti, and Brown 1987). Cartographers and geographers were quick to note the potential of ViSC for visualizing spatial data (DiBiase 1990; Monmonier 1990; Taylor 1991; MacEachren and Monmonier 1992). As this phenomenon has matured over …

  • Empowerment and Participatory Geographic Information and Multimedia Systems: Observations from Two Communities in Indonesia

Open Access•Jon M Corbett, Jon Corbett et al.•ARTICLE•Information Technologies and…•2004

Participatory Geographic Information and Multimedia Systems (PGIMSs) were developed and used by two rural communities in Indonesia. This paper reports on the empowerment impacts that resulted from this development project. Empowerment related to PGIMS is examined using a two-dimensional analytical framework that explores the phenomenon at two social scales (individual and community), and is related to four empowerment catalysts associated with th…
