  • Wenn man den Konjunktiv bemerkt hätte

    Simon Meier-Vieracker•ARTICLE•Deutsche Sprache•2025

  • Automated football match reports as models of textuality

    Open Access•Simon Meier-Vieracker•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2024

This paper deals with automated football match reports as a common genre of automated journalism. Based on a corpus of automated and human-written reports ( n = 1,302) on the same set of matches and with reference to linguistic concepts of text and textuality, the textual properties of these texts are analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The analysis is based on the idea that the task of text generation can be described as the task of …

    Open Access•Simon Meier-Vieracker•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Newer forms of racism in the context of right-wing extremism are characterised by an apparent distancing from overt racist devaluations. In addition or even beyond biological features, it is now cultural characteristics attributed to social groups which serve as grounds for practices of othering and social exclusion. This paper analyses racist discourse in the comment sections of the influential far-right blog pi-news.com where these practices ca…

Der interdisziplin re Band versammelt empirische, medienanalytische Studien zu neueren Formen von Fankulturen u…

  • Between consumers and fans: Writing fan reports as a multifunctional evaluation practice

    Open Access•Simon Meier-Vieracker•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Analytics•2022

Based on a corpus of approx. 360,000 'fan reports,' that is online concert reviews written by customers of a ticket agency, this paper analyses lexical and stylistic features of evaluative language and their social functions as means for (self-)positioning. The analysis shows that the reviews are oriented towards different and competing orders of value and their writers take different roles. While some writers act as enthusiastic fans that use th…

  • Wutreden und andere invektive Gattungen zwischen Rekonstruktion und Aneignung

    Open Access•Simon Meier-Vieracker•ARTICLE•Kulturwissenschaftliche Zeitschrift•2021

This paper deals with ‘Wutreden’ (rants) as an invective genre in digital media. It is argued that the generic aspects of rants are not due to the formal and functional features of the speech events alone, but should be described as the result of the practices of doing genre. Digital media with its affordances to recontextualization and serialization allow to reframe disparate speech events as instances of one generic scheme. As a result, the eme…

  • The evolution of football live text commentaries: A corpus linguistic case study on genre change

    Open Access•Simon Meier-Vieracker•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2021

Since the emergence of online live text commentaries on football games in the late 1990s, the genre has undergone continuous change. While linguistic research on the genre of live text commentaries emphasizes its novelty, the genre has existed in football for at least 20 years. However, diachronic studies still lack. This paper presents a corpus linguistic analysis of genre and register-specific features of German live text commentaries from 2003…

  • Wutreden – Konstruktion einer Gattung in den digitalen Medien

    Simon Meier-Vieracker, Simon Meier•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für germanistische…•2016

On the basis of a corpus of video recordings and transcriptions of Wutreden as well as comments made by journalists and users, it is shown that neither their linguistic features nor their situational functions qualify Wutreden as a distinct genre.…
