  • Artificial intelligence in Departments of Communication

    Kelley E Connor, Dennis D Cali•ARTICLE•Explorations in Media Ecology•2024•References: 9

When communication and mass media faculty returned from a kind of exile that COVID-19 had inflicted on them, they were hit almost immediately with the phenomenon of artificial intelligence (AI). The fall semester of 2023 seemed to usher in a new means by which students would complete assignments that left faculty scratching their heads. • The sacramental view of Marshall McLuhan, Walter Ong and James Carey

    Dennis D Cali•ARTICLE•Explorations in Media Ecology•2017

  • Personalist survey of media studies territories

    Dennis D Cali•ARTICLE•Explorations in Media Ecology•2016

This article attempts to distinguish characteristics of various forms of media studies. Personalism is presented as a philosophical perspective that helps to draw out those distinctions and, in the process, to affirm or to recover commitments to the inviolability and to the interrelatedness of human persons

    Dennis D Cali•ARTICLE•Explorations in Media Ecology•2011•Cited by: 5

The author undertakes research into conceptions of media ecology held by some of its leading scholars and disciplinary identity formation. Identifying media ecology as a field of study that stresses either network, nodal features or coherence of content, conceptualizing media ecology as a network seems to correspond more closely with pedagogical practice while an emphasis on primary theorists bears out in the classroom. Becher and Trowle's analys…

  • Journalism After September 11

    Dennis D Cali•ARTICLE•Journal of Mass Media Ethics•2002

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, journalism in the United States changed. Journalistic norms of objectivity and distance opened to a participatory mode of reporting. A communitarian journalism emerged in which journalists became "at one" with their subjects as they lived the story they were reporting. Chiara Lubich of Italy presents a philosophical foundation for this journalistic approach, proposing "unity" as the ethic tha…
