Examining Sourcing Practices in Environmental Reporting Across Arab Media
This study explores environmental and sustainability reporting in Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, and the UAE, examining how media ownership, platform type, and newsroom size influence source diversity. Analyzing 401 articles from 49 outlets across television, radio, print, and online media, the research identifies persistent elite source dominance and limited viewpoint diversity, especially in broadcast coverage. Although print media featured mor…
Journalism as a tool for experiential learning
This exploratory research investigates the impact of a journalism conference on high school students’ perceptions of the profession within the context of Kuwait. Utilizing Kolb’s experiential learning theory as a conceptual framework, the study explores how direct involvement in journalism-related activities influences students’ comprehension of the field and their inclination toward a journalism career. Data were gathered through a paper-based q…
Spurring or Blurring Professional Standards? The Role of Digital Technology in Implementing Journalistic Role Ideals in Contemporary Newsrooms
This study examines the perceived relevance and implementation of competing normative ideals in journalism in times of increasing use of digital technology in newsrooms. Based on survey and content analysis data from 37 countries, we found a small positive relationship between the use of digital research tools and “watchdog” performance. However, a stronger and negative relationship emerged between the use of digital audience analytics and the pe…
Assessment of Student and Teacher Perceptions on the Use of Virtual Simulation in Cell Biology Laboratory Education
Virtual laboratory simulations (VLs), particularly in Biology education, are gaining popularity. This study focused on assessing students’ and teachers’ perceptions of VLs, developed by Labster, in a first-year undergraduate cell biology course. The evaluation involved surveys and interviews with 352 respondents. Findings indicate that over 90% of students found VLs user-friendly and visually engaging. However, around 60% noted the need for signi…
Comparing Journalistic Role Performance Across Thematic Beats
Studies suggest that, at the routine level, news beats function as unique “micro-cultures.” Exploring this “particularist” approach in news content, we compare how the interventionist, watchdog, loyal, service, infotainment, and civic roles materialize across 11 thematic news beats and analyze the moderating effect of platforms, ownership, and levels of political freedom on journalistic role performance in hard and soft news. Based on the second …
Evaluating Journalistic Routines in Kuwait
This study investigates the use of information sources in Kuwait and the influence of ownership, newsroom size, and media type on the gatekeeping routines. Using a sample of 1,868 news articles from nine different news outlets, including television, radio, print, and online media, we examine the sources and actors present in the news coverage. The results of the study demonstrate the strong dominance of political sources in the construction of ne…
Understanding the use of information sources during the Covid-19 pandemic
This article explores the uses of sources in the news coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kuwait between 1 January and 31 December 2020. Our study analyses the sources and actors that were presented in 673 news stories on COVID-19 that were published in nine outlets, comparing media platforms and across time as the pandemic evolved. Does News Platform Matter? Comparing Online Journalistic Role Performance to Newspaper, Radio, and Television
The shifting role of journalism in a digital age has affected long-standing journalistic norms across media platforms. This has reinvigorated discussion on how work in online newsrooms compares to other platforms that differ in media affordances and forms. Still, more studies are needed on whether those differences translate into distinct practices, especially when examining cross-national studies. Based on the second wave of the Journalistic Rol…
Crossing forest thresholds
A Holocene palaeoecological sequence from Villaverde, south-central Spain, is presented. The pollen stratigraphy is used to infer past vegetation changes within a catchment area that represents the boundary between semi-arid, plateau and mountain vegetation. From c. 9700-7530 cal. yr BP, Pinus is dominant, probably as a result of a combination of a relatively dry climate and natural fire disturbance. From c. 7530-5900 cal. yr BP, moderate invasio…
