  • Ethnic boundary making among Swedish migrants in Helsinki

    Open Access•Ö Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2022

This is a study of ethnic boundary-making strategies promoted by Swedish migrants in Finland. The results are based on interviews with a sample of migrants in Helsinki without previous personal connection to Finland. The interviewees can be considered privileged migrants, and the study provides new information on the strategies of ethnic boundary making promoted by members of privileged ethnic groups. In Helsinki, the migrants from Sweden navigat…

  • Finnish Civil Servants on Harmonization in the Asylum System: A Study in Horizontal Europeanization

    Open Access•Ö Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2022•References: 12

This article presents a Finnish perspective on harmonization within the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). The article analyses results from a study of the judgments and experiences of Finnish civil servants concerning the harmonization of the CEAS. The year 2015 constitutes a shift in asylum policies in many European countries, and a key question is how this shift has influenced the process of harmonization of asylum policies and practices. S…

  • Migrant Capital as a Resource for Migrant Communities

    Open Access•Sanna Saksela-Bergholm, Mari Toivanen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 24

This thematic issue explores the processes and dynamics involved in how different forms of migrant capital are employed and how these relate to processes of social inclusion. Leaning on a Bourdieusian approach, we wish to move beyond existing descriptive studies and theorise the role migration plays in the accumulation, conversion and utilisation of various forms of capital by migrant communities and their members. The articles demonstrate how mi…

    Open Access•Ö Wahlbeck, Sabina Fortelius•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 9

This article explains from a Bourdieusian perspective how migrants gain access to fields in which their resources are valued and their cultural and social capital can be mobilised. Interviews conducted among Swedish migrants in Helsinki (Helsingfors) illustrate how the migrants have been able to utilise various forms of capital to gain access to the local labour market. Knowledge of the Swedish language and society may constitute cultural capital…

  • To Share or Not to Share Responsibility? Finnish Refugee Policy and the Hesitant Support for a Common European Asylum System

    Open Access•Ö Wahlbeck, Östen Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant & Refugee…•2019•Cited by: 10•References: 15

This article outlines the policy of the Finnish government in relation to the development of a Common European Asylum System (CEAS). Finland has traditionally displayed a strong commitment to international cooperation. Yet, during the European so-called refugee crisis, when Finland experienced a 10-fold increase in the number of asylum seekers, some politicians hesitated to support the decision to relocate asylum seekers within the European Union…

  • The Transferability and Mobilisability of Transnational Resources: The case of Turkish entrepreneurs in Finland

Open Access•Ö Wahlbeck, Östen Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2018•Cited by: 2

The article presents results from research on migrant entrepreneurs from Turkey in Finland. Previous research on migrant entrepreneurship indicates that transnational ties may play a role in the running of migrant businesses. In this article, I argue that there is a need to analytically make a distinction between the transferability and the mobilisability of transnational social resources. Distinguishing between the two concepts makes it possible…

  • True Finns and Non-True Finns: The Minority Rights Discourse of Populist Politics in Finland

    Ö Wahlbeck, Östen Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2016•References: 17

This article analyses minority rights discourse in statements of the populist radical right party called the True Finns, which has become a major political force in Finland in the 2010s. A framework for the analysis is provided by research about the development of political approaches to multiculturalism in Western democracies. Kymlicka (2010 Kymlicka, W., 2010. The Rise and Fall of Multiculturalism. In: S. Vertovec and S. Wessendorf, eds. The Mu…

  • The Finnish and Swedish Migration Dynamics and Transnational Social Spaces

    Ö Wahlbeck, Östen Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 13

This article contributes to debates about the long-term development of migration dynamics. The argument is based on a study of the transnational dynamics of the migration flows between Finland and Sweden. The two countries provide a good case for studying the long-term development of migration patterns, since there has been a full freedom of movement and the migration patterns are well documented. The article argues that the postwar labor migrati…

  • Debating Multiculturalism in the Nordic Welfare States

    Open Access•P Kivisto, Ö Wahlbeck•CHAPTER•Debating Multiculturalism in the…•2013

Like numerous other Western democracies, the Nordic countries — each in their own distinctive ways — have embarked on what Will Kymlicka (2010: 257) has characterized as ‘experiments in multiculturalism’ in an attempt to find new ways of incorporating ethnic minorities into the larger society, sometimes explicitly as state-sponsored policies, sometimes as grassroots initiatives, sometimes as a combination of the two. The ‘experiment’ (or what mig…

  • Entrepreneurship as Social Status: Turkish Immigrants’ Experiences of Self-Employment in Finland

    Open Access•Ö Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•MIGRATION LETTERS•2008

The article discusses the experiences of self-employment among immigrants from Turkey living in Finland. The immigrants are mainly active in the restaurant and fast food sector in Finland, primarily in small kebap and pizza businesses. The article argues that both economic and social aspects explain the experiences of self-employment. Despite economic hardship, the freedom and social status connected to entrepreneurship is highly valued. Self-emp…

  • Work in the kebab economy: A study of the ethnic economy of Turkish immigrants in Finland

    Open Access•Ö Wahlbeck, Östen Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•Ethnicities•2007•Cited by: 19•References: 24

Immigrants from Turkey often end up as self-employed or employees in the fast-food and restaurant sector in Finland. The concept of ethnic economy describes the employment pattern in this particular economic sector. The article suggests that substantial state involvement is not necessarily in conflict with the existence of ethnic economies, and in some instances welfare state policies may even support the creation of ethnic economies. The article…

  • The concept of diaspora as an analytical tool in the study of refugee communities

    Ö Wahlbeck, Östen Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•New Community•2002•Cited by: 53•References: 48

This article proposes that the research area of refugee studies can benefit from contemporary discussions about the concepts of transnationalism and diaspora. It is argued that the concept of diaspora, understood as a transnational social organisation relating both to the society of origin and the society of settlement, can give a more profound understanding of the social reality in which refugees live. The article provides a brief presentation o…

    Ö Wahlbeck•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•1998•Cited by: 14

Ethnic associations play an important role for refugees in their new country of settlement. However, refugee communities are often politically divided and find it hard to create viable ethnic organizations. This dilemma is highlighted by results obtained from an ethnographic field study of Kurdish refugees in London. The British case is of special interest, since the refugee resettlement policy is characterized by a tendency to emphasize the role…
