Is There a Sweet Spot for Gender Diversity Effects on Financial Performance in Organizations? An S‐Curve Model Explanation
By integrating theories of social identity, critical mass, and status hierarchies, we propose an S‐curve model of the relationship between gender diversity and firm performance. We test our hypotheses using two retail store samples and a third sample of Fortune 500 companies. Across all three samples, we find support for an S‐shaped relationship between gender diversity and firm performance where moderate levels of gender diversity serve as a “sw…
A needs analysis for institutional analytics
Institutional analytics (IA) can provide insights to support strategic planning in higher education. Despite its potential to reduce dropout rates, improve student performance, and support resource allocation, among other benefits, its adoption is mostly limited to small-scale implementations and isolated at the instructor level. To increase adoption, it is crucial to implement IA solutions that align with the needs of the different institutional…
What kind of learning designs do practitioners create for mobile learning? Lessons learnt from two in‐the‐wild case studies
How well do collaboration quality estimation models generalize across authentic school contexts
Multimodal learning analytics (MMLA) research has made significant progress in modelling collaboration quality for the purpose of understanding collaboration behaviour and building automated collaboration estimation models. Deploying these automated models in authentic classroom scenarios, however, remains a challenge. This paper presents findings from an evaluation of collaboration quality estimation models. We collected audio, video and log dat…
Understanding teacher design practices for digital inquiry–based science learning: The case of Go-Lab
Designing and implementing online or digital learning material is a demanding task for teachers. This is even more the case when this material is used for more engaged forms of learning, such as inquiry learning. In this article, we give an informed account of Go-Lab, an ecosystem that supports teachers in creating Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILSs). These ILSs are built around STEM–related online laboratories. Within the Go-Lab ecosystem, teachers c…
Learning design and learning analytics in mobile and ubiquitous learning: A systematic review
Mobile and Ubiquitous Learning (m/u‐learning) are finding an increasing adoption in education. They are often distinguished by hybrid learning environments that encompass elements of formal and informal learning, in activities that happen in distributed settings (indoors and outdoors), across physical and virtual spaces. Despite their purported benefits, these environments imply additional complexity in the design, monitoring and evaluation of le…
Scaffolding Collaborative Case-Based Learning during Research Ethics Training
As development of research ethics competencies is in the focus in higher education (HE) institutions, it is crucial to understand how to support the learning process during such training. While there is plenty of research on how to scaffold children’s learning of cognitive skills, there is limited knowledge on how to enhance collaborative case-based learning of research ethics competencies in HE contexts. Our aim was to identify whether, how and …
Orchestrating learning analytics (OrLA): Supporting inter-stakeholder communication about adoption of learning analytics at the classroom level
Despite the recent surge of interest in learning analytics (LA), their adoption in everyday classroom practice is still slow. Knowledge gaps and lack of inter-stakeholder communication (particularly with educational practitioners) have been posited as critical factors for previous LA adoption failures. Yet, what issues should researchers, practitioners and other actors communicate about, when considering the adoption of an LA innovation in a part…
