Rising states and the liberal world order
Many international relations analysts see rising states as a source of threat to international peace and order. Yet they often fail to provide an explicit logic for their argument or to submit their claim to rigorous empirical verification. As a consequence, existing studies on this topic tend to be based more on rhetorical assertions than careful analyses. We argue that there is a need for greater conceptual clarity, transparent logic and system…
Sino–American Relations
This is an atypical essay that provides a prognosis of Sino–American relations in Donald Trump’s second presidential term. It is long on social science generalizations about broad patterns and central tendencies and short on specific forecasts. We focus on Trump’s personality, his policy style, and the broader international environment that shapes Sino–American relations. We argue Trumpism has profound impacts on US political culture and foreign …

Acculturation orientation and expectation
In multi-ethnic societies, different cultures interact with each other, and communities often have to consider acculturation strategies. These strategies are fluid and develop across geographical boundaries while intersecting with cultural diversity. A host society's stance toward migrants and governmental migration policies significantly influence these strategies. This dynamic is evident in the case for Cambodia's ethnic Cham youth, who are Mus…
Geography and International Conflict
This book analyzes the influence of geography— defined broadly to refer to physical size, location, terrain, accessibility, insularity, climate, regions, neighborhoods, natural endowment, strategic pathways, maritime and continental orientations and even imagined communities— on international relations. Drawing on evidence and insights from cross- national research the book highlights geography’s enduring importance in and relevance to the ongoin…

The Eye4HK Meme and the Construction of an Injustice Frame
The territory-wide protest in Hong Kong in 2019, originated from a proposed amendment bill on the extradition of fugitives to China which triggered massive protests. In an incident, the police shot a female medic in the eye which outraged the public. A Korean celebrity initiated an online movement by uploading a selfie covering his right eye to Twitter showing solidarity with the victim. The eye-covered image signifies the girl who lost her eye a…
Householding and Land Ownership
Labor migration is no longer a linear movement or even a one-way and one-directional flow of labor. The advancements in transportation and communication technologies have changed trans-border mobility from permanent to a large extent, circular. Interestingly, the wage gap between labor-sending and labor-receiving countries is not the only reason triggering the move. Working abroad has become a decision made by Cambodian households, resulting in a…

In this study, urbanization effects on surface wind speed (SWS) in the GBA megalopolis, particularly Zhuhai, is investigate…
From Train Station to Night Market
Drawn from grounded perspectives of a Bangkok night market that is part of a franchise known as “Talad Rod Fai” (or “Train Station Market”), this article argues that the market’s popularity rested originally on its liminoid character, enabling the construction of an alternate public space that can be transgressive of the city’s highly urbanized landscape. Its long-term sustainability, however, appears to be at the cost of its original objectives,…
Enclave Tenement Trap
This article investigates the housing process of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. The study is an attempt to explain how these minority ethnic groups are filtered and trapped in the private rented housing sector in inner city enclaves. Focus group and in-depth interviews are used to study the low-income Pakistani and Nepalese migrants in two districts in Hong Kong. Affordability, discrimination and locational consideration draw the Pakistani and N…
Deprivation of citizenship, undocumented labor and human trafficking
English Abstract: Thailand is a popular destination for irregular labor migration from Myanmar. Among some three million Burmese migrant workers in Thailand, more than half are undocumented. Undocumented migrant workers rely on brokers to smuggle them into Thailand. Some undocumented migrant workers are lured, tricked, and forced to work but they are not rewarded with a reasonable wage. A conceptual framework of the shadow sector of labor migrati…
Prostrating Walk in the Campaign against Sino-Hong Kong Express Railway
Occupation, blockage and storming are not rare in social movements a decade after China resuming sovereignty in Hong Kong. The organizers and participants usually involve locally born young people. Some of them are secondary school students in their teens. They are known as the fourth generation or post-1980s born Hongkongers. The paper examines the cultural context of social movements involving these youth activists. It mainly studied the campai…

Statistical analysis of final year project marks in the computer engineering undergraduate program
This study is to find the existence of discrepancy between the supervisor and assessor in project assessment. A systematic approach is suggested using statistical analysis. Project marks of the computer engineering program obtained from the past two years are recorded using Excel and analyzed using SPSS. Using one-way analysis of variance, it is found that the reason for the discrepancy is due to the excessively low marks given by the assessors. …
