Personality correlates of male sexual arousal and behavior
The Psychedelics
30 heavy psychedelic users were compared with 30 matched controls using the Rosenzweig and Comrey tests. The drug-dependent group demonstrated aberrant personality traits only with respect to increased Hostility. It appears that this propensity is unrelated to degree of drug dependency and may reflect a predisposing state. People who have difficulty handling their aggressive feelings may tend to become heavy drug users. How this hostility is expr…
The Effect of Data Characteristics on Theoretical Conclusions Concerning the Physiology of Emotions
Broadly speaking, there are 3 current views pertaining to the physiology of emotions: (1) differential patterns; (2) excitation; and (3) idiosyncratic patterns. All of these have been well supported by research where reliability (statistical significance) is the criterion. Of concern here is whether the choice of data characteristics--i.e., the poststimulation state, the change concomitant with stimulation, or either of these statistically adjust…
Intemperance
Conflict vs. Conditioning
A recent Soviet report claims the classical conditioning of an involuntary response. This study refutes that claim. Replicating the Russian design, subjects were asked to inhale at the command, “Inhale,” with concomitant vasoconstriction appearing on the plethysmograph. Then Ss were asked not to inhale at the command--and significant vasoconstriction was again obtained, just as was reported. However, in the present study, the same Ss were also tr…
A Demonstration of the Long-Term Retention of a Conditioned GSR
During World War II in the U. S. Navy the “battle stations” (general quarters) signal often preceded aversive stimulation. In considering the lack of opportunity for extinction it was hypothesized that this signal should still, 15–20 years later, elicit a conditioned autonomic response. The results showed that a group of navy veterans gave significantly greater galvanic skin response than a control group of army veterans to the “battle stations” …
