A Cinematology Approach to Behavioral Change Regarding the Mental Illness Stigma in Society
Value Consistency in Peace Journalism
The father of peace studies addressed more nuances in the progress toward peace than journalism scholarship has applied to date. One problem has been emphasizing direct violence over cultural and structural violence. This essay questions the assumption that all parties in a conflict should be treated equally, suggesting that journalists judge motivations ranging from selfish to philanthropic. Philosophies of just peace and just war provide a seri…
An investigation of the conceptualization of peace and war in peace journalism studies of media coverage of national and international conflicts
According to Galtung’s articles ‘On the role of the media in worldwide security and peace’ (1986) and ‘High road, low road: Charting the course for peace journalism’ (1998), war journalism and peace journalism are two competing frames when reporting news on war and conflict. War journalists reactively report on conflict in a way that propagates violence, victory, and an elitist orientation. On the contrary, peace journalists proactively report on…

Radio promotion history
When radio was in its golden age, so was the hobby of stamp collecting. This article explored the way that philatelic ephemera were used in the promotion of US radio between the 1920s and 1960s. Philatelic programmes used the natural affinity of their audience for collectibles as an opportunity to provide cheap premium prizes and to create offers connected with programme sponsors. Non-philatelic programmes, stations and a manufacturer also took a…

Inhibiting Speech through Exemplar Distribution
This research uses disproportionate exemplar distributions in an attempt to create a spiral of silence effect for a controversial issue. No support is found for exemplars predictably causing a spiral of silence. There is mild evidence that perceived opinion can silence "public display expression." More importantly, opinion is found to predict speaking out, a phenomenon most likely associated with a cultural bias effect

Commercial Humor Enhancement of Program Enjoyment
Previous research has shown that if commercials showcase higher levels of humor, they can enhance the viewer's enjoyment of the program in which the commercials are contained. The theory of excitation transfer has been used to explain this phenomenon. This experimental research suggests some modifications to its application in this setting, suggesting that there must be an adequate level of TV program appeal initially for the appeal to be enhance…

The Promise
This paper refutes Goran Hyden's conclusion that “economy of affection”, or various informal social and economic linkages, cannot play an important developmental role. This paper argues instead that when the state actively participates in and encourages various degrees of affective relationships, the human suffering caused by the destruction of the peasantry through the introduction of capitalism can be alleviated. As a case study, this paper ass…

Using Humorous Programs as a Vehicle for Humorous Commercials
Many programs and commercials use humor to entertain and persuade viewers. This research examines the effect of levels of humor in program context on commercials and the perceptions of the products they advertise. Effects of humor levels in the commercials themselves are examined, as are effects of gender on perception of humor and product image. Increased program humor was detrimental to recall of products advertised. Gender, however, interacted…
The Relation Between Television Viewing and the Values Orientations of Japanese Students
Applying the postulates and methodology of the universal value structure theory articulated by Schwarrs and Bilsky (1987, 1990) to mass communication, this study employs value type analysis to investigate how respondents' cultural background and television viewing habits are related to their perceptions of the importance of value types and to individualistic or collectivistic value structures. In this study, we found significant relations between…
