  • Selling to soldiers

    Cindy Elmore•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2023•Referencias: 9

The Stars and Stripes newspaper is an important site for the study of gender in the US military because it has often been among the only news material available for deployed members of the armed forces at war. An analysis of advertising in Stars and Stripes during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003–2011) found that ads constructed and privileged a commodified, warrior hero masculinity unattainable by military women. The military identity of female ser…

  • Need for instruction in entrepreneurial journalism

Cindy Elmore, Brian L Massey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Media Practice•2012•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 6

Recent moves by journalism programmes to create convergence skills curricula may fall short of helping students to land jobs after they graduate. Students face dwindling prospects of full-time work as employees of news organizations, and that raises the question of whether programmes should teach them to generate their own work. For this study, freelance journalists were surveyed on their perspectives about whether journalism programmes should de…

  • Happier Working for Themselves

    Brian L Massey, Cindy Elmore•ARTICLE•Journalism Practice•2011•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 14

This survey analysis of women freelance journalists is a first step toward filling a gap in the largely uncharted territory of women in the United States who leave traditional employer-based news jobs for self-employment. The findings show that female respondents were satisfied with their work hours, earnings, and ability to combine their atypical newswork jobs with raising children. However, they were no more satisfied with their work than male …

  • When the Department of Defense Writes the Rules

    Open Access•Cindy Elmore•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication Inquiry•2011•Referencias: 3

This study examines the original language and revisions to two Department of Defense policies governing the Stars and Stripes, a unique American newspaper serving overseas military members and families. At times, some of those changes have increased Pentagon oversight and stripped freedoms from the journalists or the newspaper, which is intended to provide reliable news and original reporting to the troops. Despite the newspaper’s journalistic su…

  • Stars and Stripes

    Cindy Elmore•ARTICLE•Media History•2010•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

Stars and Stripes is a unique newspaper with a distinctive mission, ownership and journalistic staff unlike any in the USA. Despite its parentage in the US Department of Defense, directives give the newspaper editorial independence. Still, military commanders and Pentagon overseers have challenged and interfered with those rights since the newspaper's First World War beginnings in Europe. This study examines the published accounts of that struggl…

  • Turning Points and Turnover among Female Journalists

    Cindy Elmore•ARTICLE•Women s Studies in Communication•2009•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 1

This study uses feminist standpoint theory to obtain and analyze the discourse of women journalists who quit newspapers. Many of the women expressed regrets over their unmet ambitions at newspapers and their lost identities as journalists. While their communication included regret and marginalization, resistance was also seen, as the women discursively continue to describe themselves as journalists, continue to pursue freelance journalism work, a…
