The Magazine Mirage
This study explores a Capstone course’s pedagogical process and considers both the challenges and triumphs that emerge from experiential learning within a news desert region. The research employs micro-ethnographic methods to analyze the learning outcomes gleaned by both students and instructors of one magazine publishing Capstone course over the timespan of 9 years, 2014 to 2023. The research acknowledges the pedagogical evolution of the Capston…
Mergers, Acquisitions and Magazine Media in 2021
The purpose of this study is to examine the profit-driven approach utilized by global media conglomerates and explore how trade-offs, such as human capital and a decrease in the diversity of cultural voices may accompany such strategies. This study examines Twitter's hashtag trend topic functionality in America and explores social dialects within popular trending topics, specifically categories relating to the social constructions of gender and race where the majority of users employ Black avatars. The methodology applies a content analysis of words within a specific 24-hour trending hashtag (#becauseofhoes), followed by a critical discourse analysis, informed by feminist thought…

Specifically, this analysis compares health stories about celebrities who have cancer, a health problem that is largely out of personal control, with those about celebrities with health problems perceived as being caused by overindulgence (addiction and obesity).…

That influence raises ethical issues: journalistic independence and access to the media marketplace for a variety of messages. This project analyzes the “soft news” content of the two most popular morning television news shows, The Today Show and Good Morning America during November 2007 sweeps. The analysis demon…
