  • A Comparison of virtual physical education teacher education experiences in Brasilia and Ottawa

    Open Access•Juliana De Oliveira Freire, R J Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Interfaces Brasil/Canadá•2024

The COVID-19 pandemic inspired changes in the way we teach and think about the curriculum of physical education (PE). This comparative inquiry pays particular attention to the ways PE was introduced in two university teacher education programs, one based in Brasilia-Brazil and the other in Ottawa-Canada. The three dimensions which guided our comparative analysis included: a) our respective COVID-19 circumstances, b) the PE Elementary Curriculum w…

  • Physical literacy, health and interactive aging

    Open Access•R J Lloyd, Stephen J Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2024•References: 12

Physical literacy (PL), a concept commonly associated with the early years, physical education, and youth sport development, can become a meaningful determinant of health and longevity for the adult and older adult population. A review of 55 recent publications from 2018 to 2023 that encompassed physical literacy conceptual frameworks, assessments, and intervention-based studies was undertaken through an heuristic inspired by the philosophy which…

  • Salsa Rhythms and Soul Connections

    Open Access•R J Lloyd, Stephen J Smith•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2023

The rhythmic interplay of accent, tempo, and musical mood is expressed in the bodily postures, gestures, and expressions of attuned responsiveness in Salsa Dura, a genre of salsa music from the 1970s featuring improvisational dance solos. These dancers embrace the feelings and flows of soloing musicians going off and breaking free from any predictable form and structure. We inquire into how world-class salsa dancers and educators feel themselves …

  • Ghostly Objects and the Horrors of Ghastly Ancestors in the Ghost Stories of Louisa Baldwin

    Ruth Heholt, R J Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Women s Writing•2022

This article examines the late Victorian ghost stories of Louisa Baldwin. Looking at several stories from her 1895 collection The Shadow on the Blind, we argue that, although her work is a part of the ongoing tradition of women’s ghost stories in the nineteenth century, they differ from most by the weight of emphasis given to family, ancestry, and the importance of material, inherited objects. We argue that Louisa cannot be separated out from her…

  • Becoming InterActive for Life

    Open Access•R J Lloyd, Stephen J Smith•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 42

The overarching purpose of the InterActive for Life (IA4L) project is to mobilize relational knowledge of partnered movement practices for physical education practitioners. Through a participatory, motion-sensing phenomenological methodology, relational knowledge gleaned from world class experts in salsa dance, equestrian arts, push hands Tai Chi and acroyoga, and analyzed through the Function2Flow conceptual model, was shared with Physical Educa…

  • Dancing into Ubuntu

    Open Access•Kahmaria Pingue, R J Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural and Pedagogical Inquiry•2021

This inquiry describes the lived experiences of five Bachelor of Education students learning and teaching Kpanlogo, a West African dance. Each experience was conceptually analyzed with the Sankofa bird, depicted with its beak reaching back to retrieve a golden egg on its back. This symbol embodies the Ghanaian proverb, to go back, physically or spiritually, to retrieve what was once lost or forgotten. Such a framework orients us to the philosophy…

  • The power of interactive flow in salsa dance

    Open Access•R J Lloyd•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2021

What might it be like to sense one’s motile power as a follower in salsa dance, particularly in moments when flow manifests? Does a follower simply go along with the lead’s flow or does a different kind of flow emerge? Such questions guided this motion-sensing phenomenological (MSP) inquiry into the felt sense of power experienced in the movements of interactive flow that features two-time world salsa champion, coach, and international judge, Any…

  • Back to the Dance Itself

    R J Lloyd, Rebecca Lloyd•ARTICLE•Journal of Phenomenological…•2020

  • From dys/function to flow

    R J Lloyd•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•2015

When the existential state of flow is experienced, the flesh of oneself perceptually intertwines with the Merleau-Pontian flesh of the world. Perceived constraints and worries disappear and, according to Csikszentmihalyi (1996, 2000, 2008), longtime researcher of flow, all that exists is the merging of bodily action and awareness within the timeless nature of the present moment. Such a state is highly desirable and for those who experience flow o…

  • Moving to learn and learning to move

    R J Lloyd•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•2012

A phenomenological study aimed at exploring the process of becoming physically educated with an interdisciplinary movement consciousness was conducted with the intention of understanding how basic motions, such as reaching and stretching, experienced in kinetic–kinaesthetic discovery may deepen a primordial, Merleau-Pontian connection to the world. A JungleSport climbing-based program with a series of vertical challenges framed the context of thi…

  • Promoting Vitality in Health and Physical Education

    Open Access•Stephen J Smith, R J Lloyd•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2006

Vitality draws together the interests of health and physical education. Already these fields of education have come together, with health, fitness, wellness, and active and healthy living as shared curricular concepts. Vitality furthers these conjunctions by having us rethink prevailing views of the body of knowledge in health and physical education. More than a concept, vitality is promoted phenomenologically in terms of the essential movements …

  • Agricultural landscapes

    R J Lloyd•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•1979

  • On the Phonology of the Malay and Negrito Dialects spoken in the Malay States of Lower Siam

Open Access•R J Lloyd, Richard Lloyd•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1921

Mr. W. W. Skeat, M.A., the leader of the Cambridge University Exploring Expedition to Lower Siam in 1899-1900, has placed in my hands for detailed examination the transcriptions and phonographic records of a number of native songs and chants. They were gathered by him in the States of Patani, Kělantan, and Kědah, and are therefore chiefly worded in the Malay dialect of those States, which presents very interesting phonological differences from St…
