Barriers to accessing medications for opioid use disorder among rural individuals
Access barriers vary by MOUD type for rural individuals with OUD. Compared to sublingual buprenorphine, methadone access was hindered more by transportation difficulties, while injectable long-acting buprenorphine was hindered more by affordability and finding a doctor or program. Impact of a Permitless Concealed Firearm Carry Law in West Virginia, 1999–2015 and 2016–2020
We used firearm mortality and sales data to assess the impact of HB 4145, a May 2016 law that legalized concealed firearm carry without a permit in West Virginia. Firearm mortality was significantly higher (29%) in the years after the enactment of the law; handgun mortality was also higher (45% increase), whereas long gun deaths and firearm sales were unaffected. The leading causes of death (rate per 100,000 prisoner-years) in Maryland state prisons for the period 1979-87 were circulatory system disease (59), suicide (40), and homicide and legal intervention (30). Geographic variations in hip fracture rates across the nine US Census Divisions were examined using data for elderly Whites from the 1979-85 National Hospital Discharge Survey. Coding external causes of injury (E-codes) in Maryland hospital discharges 1979-88
We examined the trends in hospital discharge E-coding in Maryland over a 10-year period. The overall proportion of E-coded discharges has increased from 40 percent in 1979 to 55 percent in 1988. E-coding was lower in the severely injured, the elderly, and patients with long hospital stays.
