Cost of Expulsion, Dissent and Human Rights in Russia
With Russia outside the Council of Europe, the possibilities for successful litigation against the state by Russian citizens have become limited. In more ways than one, Russians made the Strasbourg court their own. Russia was among the states with the most applications against it. At the same time, victims of Russia’s abuses, dissenters, and human rights defenders were among the ECtHR’s main beneficiaries. Despite Russia’s mixed record of complia…
I Do Not Forgive!”
Reconciliation is a central goal of transitional justice. Yet, its importance for democratization can give reconciliation a coercive edge, pressuring victims to abandon legitimate grievances for the good of the nation to come. This article considers struggles over popular sovereignty in Tunisia's democratic transition, by examining the anticorruption campaign Manish Msamah (“I do not forgive”). Manish Msamah was formed in 2015 to defeat the Proje…
Tunisian Cinema after the Arab Spring: Portrait of a Nation in Transition
In the closing scene of The Last of Us (2016), we see the torso of a young black man who stands naked before a clearing in the forest. As he gazes out at a cascade of water tumbling down to a rocky pool below, the young man's image gradually fades away, absorbed into the landscape. Nothing about this scene, from the blackness of the protagonist to the coniferous forest, has any clear reference point in Tunisian national cinema. Indeed, director A…
Kin-Work in a Time of Jihad: Sustaining Bonds of Filiation and Care for Tunisian Foreign Combatants
In this article, I examine the politics of kin-work performed by families of Tunisian foreign combatants, whose sons were recruited to jihadi militias following the 2011 Arab Spring. Here, I refer to a form of affective labor that engenders kinship relations through the performance of intentional acts. In the context of postrevolutionary Tunisia, where the state is currently embroiled in a domestic war against terror, families of foreign combatan…
My story”—HIV positive adolescents tell their story through film
The global commitment to universal access for people in need of antiretroviral therapy has transformed the lives of adolescents with HIV. In contrast, there has been limited commitment at policy or service level to the need for effective therapeutic interventions which can help them to cope with their life experiences. It is imperative that the scale up of antiretroviral therapy programmes is accompanied by evidence-based therapeutic approaches i…

Achilles the Bitter: Gorky and the Genocide
What trace do genocide and exile from the homeland leave on an artist's aesthetic language? Given the previous century's history, it would seem a fundamental question, especially for an artist such as Arshile Gorky, a survivor of the first modern genocide of 1915. How did this experience – too deep to be expunged by any subsequent biographical events – shape Gorky's art? Should we look to iconography (to the allusive symbolic content of Gorky's s…

The wages of neglect: Death and disease in the American workplace
Black lung, only recently recognised in the US as an occupational disease in coal miners, has taken a toll of something like 200, 000 lives in death and disablement. Other occupational diseases affect high proportions of the work force but only 10% of job related disorders are recorded by the government. A plea is made for more protection in the workplace and for adequate compensation for injured and disabled workers
