The Use of the Vernacular
This paper argues that in fourteenth-century Italy the vernacularisation of Latin municipal constitutions and the direct vernacular composition of the law were purposely sought out by the ruling elite as ideological and political mechanisms to build consensus and achieve support in municipal and regional states. By analysing the statutes of some of the most important communal cities as well as the fundamental laws of the Papal State and the Sardi…
Multidisciplinary approaches and digital technologies in the study of Early Christian architecture
This study presents a multidisciplinary investigation into the Sacellum of SS. Teuteria and Tosca in Verona, an early Christian chapel dated between the mid-5th and early 6th centuries. Conducted as part of the CaMeRoofs project under the HORIZON-MSCA framework (2024-2026), the research aims to reconstruct the architectural evolution and historical context of this unique monument through the integration of archaeological, architectural, and digit…
Celebrations and epithaphs of a municipal tradition. Reflections on the fourteenth-century vulgarization and sixteenth-century printing of Tuscan communal Statutes
The article examines the meaning assumed by the printing of the municipal statutes during the sixteenth century in some of the main cities in the duchy and grand duchy, as well as other subregional states in Tuscany (the republic of Lucca and the signoria of Massa and Carrara). Aside from the impression of proclamations (bandi) and regulations relating to non-territorial institutions, the work sets out to show how the printing of ancient and rece…

L’in…
Conflicts and Continuity in the Eleventh-Century Religious Reform
Studies of the ecclesiastical reform of the eleventh century have often highlighted conflict between reforming monks and simoniac clerics. This was especially true in the urban contexts of Milan and Florence, cities that played a leading role, at the time, in the history of Italian religious life. Through the presentation of an exemplary case study, this paper shows how around an important Florentine monastery, an episcopal foundation, the confli…
