  • An Inundated Indigenous Quarry Preserved in Apalachee Bay, Florida, USA

    Open Access•Morgan F Smith, Morgan Smith•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2026•References: 54

Recent investigations in Apalachee Bay, in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, have focused on a suite of newly discovered raw material reduction localities, expanding the existing data set of archaeological sites in this renowned submerged landscape. One particular site, 8Je1796‐Clint's Scallop Hole, is the most thoroughly examined such site in the Gulf of Mexico at present. This quarry is an outcrop of high‐quality Suwannee chert, which occurs spo…

  • The Early Holocene archaeology of Florida

    Jessi J Halligan, David K Thulman et al.•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2023•References: 8

Three of the most influential archaeological models in the southeastern US have argued that early foragers organized their lifeways via seasonal movement along major drainage basins; around access to raw material sources, crossing drainage basins; or around group foraging needs, following central place foraging models. We examine the distribution of Early Holocene Bolen sites in Florida in light of these models by combining Florida Master Site Fi…

  • Lithic Technological Organization of the Suwannee Tradition

    Morgan F Smith•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2023•References: 28

Suwannee points are an unfluted lanceolate style found on the Lower Southeastern Coastal Plain of North America. Suwannee points are undated but thought to represent a regional, post-Clovis group that lived during the Younger Dryas, with a hypothesized age range of ∼12,700-11,500 years ago based on contextual data. This paper presents analyses of the Suwannee component from Ryan-Harley, the only known discrete Suwannee assemblage. The site is int…

  • A Reexamination of the Paleoindian Bison Kill at the Alexon Site, Florida

    M R Waters, Zachary A Newell et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2021

A chert object embedded in the cranium of a bison found at the Alexon site, Florida, is cited as direct evidence of human and megafauna interaction at the end of the Pleistocene in the American Southeast. Previous analyses identified the chert object as the mid-section of a lanceolate projectile point. Radiocarbon ages on unpurified bison collagen from two separate bison elements yielded Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene ages. We were able to r…

  • The magnificent seven

    Michael K Faught, Morgan F Smith•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 15

There are significant challenges to answering questions of Native American precontact history with data from sites in marine submerged continental shelf settings. We find seven published examples of projects in the Americas that encountered archaeological sites through systematic and phased geoarchaeological research. These seven projects share similar characteristics: recognition of archaeological potential, mapping and learning paleolandscape c…

  • Geoarchaeological investigations at the Ryan‐Harley Paleoindian site, Florida (8JE1004)

    Open Access•Morgan F Smith•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 10

Ryan‐Harley (8JE1004) in the Wacissa River of North Florida is one of few sites in the Eastern United States that contains an unfluted lanceolate point component (Suwannee) in a buried context. Extinct and extirpated faunal remains found within the Suwannee artifact layer at Ryan‐Harley have been cited as evidence of a Pleistocene faunal refugium in the Southeastern United States. In 2015, geoarchaeological excavations were undertaken to determin…
