Sum Scores of Behavioral Measurement Scales
This article revisits the popular and widely used sum scores resulting from multiple-component measuring instruments, in the light of a recent resurgence of interest in them. We draw attention to a potentially serious disadvantage of sum scores that can be associated with (i) substantially larger bias and mean squared error than an alternative approach to parameter estimation, in addition to (ii) the inconsistency feature of an estimator frequent…
Sum Scores of Behavioral Scales
A recent discussion of potentially serious drawbacks of the widely used scale sum scores is extended to nonnormal observed variables, and a didactic discussion is provided of their underpinnings. It is pointed out that the possibly marked bias and mean squared error as well as parameter estimator inconsistency, which result if using the sum scores as predictors of response measures, are not limited to normally distributed manifest variables. The …
A meta-analysis of the correlation between self-regulated learning strategies and academic performance in online and blended learning environments
The One-Parameter Logistic Model Can Be True With Zero Probability for a Unidimensional Measuring Instrument
This note is concerned with the chance of the one-parameter logistic (1PL-) model or the Rasch model being true for a unidimensional multi-item measuring instrument. It is pointed out that if a single dimension underlies a scale consisting of dichotomous items, then the probability of either model being correct for that scale can be zero. The question is then addressed, what the consequences could be of removing items not following these models. …
Fitting Covariance Structure Models With Arbitrary Observed Distributions
The large-sample behavior of the asymptotically distribution-free estimator in covariance structure analysis is studied. It is shown that with increasing sample size and under suitable conditions, the estimator almost surely converges to the true parameter value. This strong convergence (i) represents numerical convergence with probability 1 of the resulting estimates of model parameters to their respective population values, as well as (ii) is s…
Source and Role of Bronze Coins in Maritime Trade During the Song (960–1276 ad )
In the 1440s, a boom in copper production in northern Guangdong supported the establishment of a mint called “Yongtong‐jian (YTJ)” near the copper mine, promoting the unprecedented prosperity of maritime trade. However, our understanding of the importance of the YTJ mint in the Age of Discovery is still very limited. We conducted a scientific analysis of 44 underwater Song coins and bronze ingots recovered from the Beijiao site in the South China…
Evaluation of Maximal Reliability for Multidimensional Measuring Instruments Using Structural Equation Modeling
Multidimensional measuring instruments are often used in behavioral, social, educational, marketing, and biomedical research. For these scales, the paper discusses how to find the optimal score based on their components that is associated with the highest possible reliability. Within the framework of structural equation modeling, an approach to point and interval estimation of the maximal reliability coefficient of general structure measuring ins…
A meta-analysis of the efficacy of self-regulated learning interventions on academic achievement in online and blended environments in K-12 and higher education
Numerous empirical studies, including meta-analyses, have confirmed the impact of self-regulated learning (SRL) on learners’ academic achievement in traditional or face-to-face learning environments. However, prior meta-analyses rarely examined the efficacy of SRL interventions on academic achievement in online or blended education across elementary education, secondary education, higher education, and adult education. Therefore, this meta-analys…
"Conscientiously Implement the "Law on Compulsory Education
At the Yongdingmen Railway Station in Beijing, school-aged children with bundles over their shoulders follow the milling crowds, jostle one another as they get on public buses, and merge into the 250,000-strong ranks of Beijing's construction workers
