Ciencia, tecnología, saberes locales e imperio en el mundo atlántico, siglos XV-XIX
Objective/context: With this introduction (and this dossier) we seek to encourage reflection and debate around new perspectives in the face of the problematized but, in some way, still predominant narratives of a history of science centered on northern and western Europe. In particular, we seek to encourage reflection and debate on the role of the Ibero-American hybrid world and the role of indigenous knowledge in the rise of modern science. Meth…
Sylvia Sellers-García. Distance and Documents at the Spanish Empire's Periphery

Here I study the particular case of the construction of the drainage canal-tunnel, the desagüe, of Mexico City. Between the 1550s and 1610s in Mexico City, there emerged a set of procedures that validated empir…
Empiricism in the Spanish Atlantic World
The Atlantic World fostered the creation and development of institutions and institutionalized empirical practices for the study and organization of the New World. This empiricism was articulated in reports based on personal experience, testing practices, and collaborative practices that put together partial reports into general views of natural things. The story of Spanish activities in the Atlantic World helps to explain the emergence of empiri…
Experiencing Nature
As Spain colonized the Americas during the sixteenth century, Spanish soldiers, bureaucrats, merchants, adventurers, physicians, ship pilots, and friars explored the natural world, gathered data, drew maps, and sent home specimens of America's vast resources of animals, plants, and minerals. This amassing of empirical knowledge about Spain's American possessions had two far-reaching effects. It overturned the medieval understanding of nature deri…
