The Intersection of Problems, Policy, and Politics
Persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infections can cause cancer (e.g., cervical/vaginal/penile/anal/oropharyngeal). The HPV vaccine prevents cancer, yet U.S. vaccination rates remain low. We explored sociopolitical factors in the adoption of Puerto Rico’s HPV vaccine school-entry requirement. Multiple streams framework explains how the intersection of problems, policy, and politics streams influence policy adoption. Policy entrepreneurs work on…
Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening among College Women by Race/Ethnicity and Number of Male Sex Partners
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of race/ethnicity and number of male partners with sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening among college women in the United States. Methods: Using National Survey of Family Growth data, survey-weighted multiple predictor logistic regression models were analyzed. Results: Hispanic, Black, and Other race women had higher odds of STI screening than White women. Screening od…
Cognitive maps and the structure of observed learning outcome assessment of physiotherapy students’ ethical reasoning knowledge
Assessment of student learning in complex areas is challenging, particularly when there is interest in students’ deeper understanding and connectivity of concepts. Assessment of ethics learning has been limited by lack of consensus regarding what is effective and an overfocus on quantification at the expense of clinical or ethical relevance. Cognitive maps provide one means to evaluate depth and personal meaning of students’ ethics knowledge. A p…
Network Structure Moderates Intergroup Differentiation of Stereotyped Rumors
The role of network structure in intergroup differentiation—the bipolarization of stereotypes that are defensive (ingroup-positive/outgroup-negative) and non-defensive (outgroup-positive/ingroup-negative)—was investigated using a Dynamic Social Impact Theory (DSIT) framework. Three computer-mediated laboratory social network experiments were pooled to test the interaction of network clustering (cliquish structure) and segregation (personal networ…
Isolating and Examining Sources of Suppression and Multicollinearity in Multiple Linear Regression
The presence of suppression (and multicollinearity) in multiple regression analysis complicates interpretation of predictor-criterion relationships. The mathematical conditions that produce suppression in regression analysis have received considerable attention in the methodological literature but until now nothing in the way of an analytic strategy to isolate, examine, and remove suppression effects has been offered. In this article such an appr…
