Origin of Inequality in Transegalitarian Societies: An Agent Based Model
We present an agent based model (ABM), describing the origins of inequalities and social stratification in certain class of affluent hunter-gatherer societies. These societies, defined in the anthropological literature as transegalitarian, are characterised by the availability of surplus resources and the emergence of social inequalities, predating more complex structures found in sedentary agricultural communities. The relative simplicity of the s…
What Information Drives Political Polarization? Comparing the Effects of In-group Praise, Out-group Derogation, and Evidence-based Communications on Polarization
This project differentiates between communication that praises one's political in-group ( in-group praise ), attacks the opposition ( out-group derogation ), or focuses on policy details ( evidence based ), testing their effects on network and attitude polarization. We begin with an agent-based model, which shows that congenial evidence-based exchanges polarize the network and the inclusion of identity-driven communications leads to greater polar…
Opinion Dynamics Model Based on Cognitive Biases of Complex Agents
We present an introduction to a novel way of simulating individual and group opinion dynamics, taking into account how various sources of information are filtered due to cognitive biases. The agent-based model presented here falls into the 'complex agent' category, in which the agents are described in considerably greater detail than in the simplest 'spinson' model. To describe agents' information processing, we introduced mechanisms of updating …

Innovation Suppression and Clique Evolution in Peer-Review-Based, Competitive Research Funding Systems: An Agent-Based Model
Peer review is ubiquitous in modern science: from the evaluation of publications to the distribution of funding. While there is a long tradition of, and many arguments for, peer review as a beneficial and necessary component of scientific processes, the exponential growth of the research community, the 'publish or perish' pressures and increasing insecurity and competition for research grants have led to an increasing number of voices describing …
Two-Year Study of Emotion and Communication Patterns in a Highly Polarized Political Discussion Forum
The article presents analysis of a Polish Internet political discussion forum, characterized by significant polarization and high levels of emotion. The study compares samples of discussions gathered at three periods during a 2-year time, during which events occurred that significantly increased the already strong political division of Polish society (the sudden death of the President in a plane crash, snap elections, accusations of assassination…

Simulations of opinion changes in scientific communities
Dilbert-Peter Model of Organization Effectiveness: Computer Simulations
We describe a computer model of general effectiveness of a hierarchical organization depending on two main aspects: effects of promotion to managerial levels and efforts to self-promote of individual employees, reducing their actual productivity. The combination of judgment by appearance in the promotion to higher levels of hierarchy and the Peter Principle (which states that people are promoted to their level of incompetence) results in fast dec…
