Considerations for trustworthy cross-border interoperability of digital identity systems in developing countries
In developing nations, the implementation of Foundational Identity Systems (FIDS) has optimised service delivery and inclusive economic growth. Cross-border e-government will gain traction as developing countries increasingly look to identity federation and trustworthy interoperability through FIDS for the identification and authentication of identity holders. Despite this potential, the interoperability of FIDS in the African identity ecosystem …
Interpretable AI-driven causal inference to uncover the time-varying effects of PM2.5 and public health interventions on Covid-19 infection rates
Although COVID-19 appears to be better controlled since its initial outbreak in 2020, it continues to threaten citizens in different communities due to the unpredictability of new strains. The global viral pandemic has resulted in over 700 million infections and 7 million deaths worldwide, with 22 million cases occurring in the United Kingdom (UK). Emerging evidence has suggested that outdoor PM 2.5 pollutants can significantly contribute to COVI…
The Social World of Twitter: Topics, Geography, and Emotions
Debate is open as to whether social media communities resemble real-life communities, and to what extent. We contribute to this discussion by testing whether established sociological theories of real-life networks hold in Twitter. In particular, for 228,359 Twitter profiles, we compute network metrics (e.g., reciprocity, structural holes, simmelian ties) that the sociological literature has found to be related to parts of one's social world (i.e.…
Wild interdisciplinarity: Ethnography and computer science
Drawing on the experiences of a novel collaborative project between sociologists and computer scientists, this paper identifies a set of challenges for fieldwork that are generated by this wild interdisciplinarity. Public Access Wi-Fi Service was a project funded by an ‘in-the-wild’ research programme, involving the study of digital technologies within a marginalised community, with the goal of addressing digital exclusion. We argue that similar …
