Early farming and wild plant exploitation in the Linear Pottery Culture of southeastern Poland
The transition from hunter-gatherer societies to agricultural communities in southern Poland began in the latter half of the 6th millennium bc with the arrival of the first farming groups from the Danube region, associated with the Linear Pottery culture (LBK). This study presents new archaeobotanical data from two LBK sites in southeastern Poland: Rzeszów-Zwięczyca site 3 and Łańcut site 3. The analyses revealed key cultivated species, primarily…
A contribution to research on the knapped lithic assemblage from the Late Neolithic site of Altheim in Lower Bavaria
The lithic artefacts from Altheim, being regarded as essential for the interpretation of the site, have for a verylong time attracted attention. Here we concentrate on the discoveries made during the excavation of sections of ditches in 2013-2020. Certain earlier observations were confirmed by the latest excavations, namely the high proportion of arrowheads among the flaked stone tools. A large number of the arrowheads were burnt. Many of them ha…
Chipped lithic artefacts from Paradimi and Krovili (Thrace, Northern Greece). Remarks from the 2020 surface investigations
The paper presents flaked lithic materials from two tell-type Neolithic sites Paradimi and Krovili located in Eastern Thrace. They were obtained during systematic and detailed surface surveys. All the collected lithic materials were examined and described. Some conclusions about processing and sources of raw materials were presented along with comparisons to other Neolithic sites in northern Greece.
Archaeobotanical and palaeoenvironmental analyses from the easternmost Early Neolithic sites at Kamyane-Zavallia (Ukraine) and Nicolaevca V (Moldova)
Recent archaeological excavations at two Early Neolithic settlements at Kamyane-Zavallia (Ukraine) and Nicolaevca V (Moldova) have provided new plant assemblages. The sites belong to the Linearbandkeramik culture (LBK) and represent its easternmost settlements. In these regions, charred plant macro-remains are still very rarely sampled for and investigated, so these results may shed light on the plant-based economy of the first farmers of this ar…
A specific obsidian workplace at the Malice culture settlement in Kraczkowa 31, Podkarpackie Voivodship (southeastern Poland)
This paper presents a chipped assemblage from the Malice culture settlement in Kraczkowa 31. Obsidian artefacts dominate in this inventory. The typological structure of obsidian items (small numbers of cores, flakes and blades, and numerous various chips) indicates the existence of a specific workshop where processing of this material occurred
Aspects of a Bandkeramik settlement near Olteni in Transylvania
In Transylvania, settlements of the Transdanubian Linienbandkeramik (LBK) are predominantly found in the Braşov Depression. Excavations at the LBK settlement of Olteni, located on the right bank of the Olt River, brought to light the fragmented remains of at least two ground plans of Early Neolithic longhouses. These are the first convincing evidence of such structures in Romania. The pottery allows dating the site to a later Notenkopf phase of t…
Lithic industry of two Linearbandkeramik sites in Moldova (Nicolaevca V and Ţâra II)
The two Linear Pottery culture lithic complexes presented in this paper came from northern Moldova. The Nicolaevca V assemblage was gathered from excavations of a small LBK dwelling, while the Ţâra II collection came from an eight-shaped pit. There was a “deposit” of objects suitable for knapping found in Nicolaevca V. This complex reflects flake-oriented expedient knapping. The Ţâra II complex represents a complicated sequence for obtaining regu…
Kozachyi Yar 1
In Kozavchyn on the Southern Bug, an Early Copper Age settlement surrounded by trenches was explored by means of field surveys and magnetic prospection. In addition to the enclosing trenches, the magnetogram revealed a palisade trench and remains of pits and burnt houses, which covered a contiguous area with archaeological findings of almost 4 ha situated on a spur with the field name “Kozachyi Yar”. The settlement belongs to the Trypillia BI loc…
We are One
This paper discusses anthropomorphic representations from two Ukrainian sites that can be dated to the Linear Pottery Culture. They can be categorized as applications and incised human representations. Although their posture is similar, their significance was likely different. The applications were fixed to vessels’ walls in such a way that they look inside the container, whereas the incised representations look outward, facing anyone that would …
Raptus Sabinae? Of a female calvarium from the Bandkeramik settlement of Rovantsi in Volhynia
Of a female calvarium from the Bandkeramik settlement of Rovantsi in Volhynia
Zwei runde Spondylusklappen aus der bandkeramischen Siedlung von Rovancì in Wolhynien. Ein Beitrag zu Tausch und Status im frühen Neolithikum
On the Bandkeramik (LBK) settlement of Rovancì in Volhynia two round valves of Spondylus gaederopus were discovered during a rescue excavation carried out in 2009. In the upper part of each of the artefacts two artificial holes with traces of suspension (grooves) can be observed. The two medallions were unearthed in the left longpit of an LBK longhouse. The find might be interpreted as depot or cenotaph. It substantially increases the extent of t…
